Reliku's "VSR-X" project

Trying my hand at machining a VSR upper. Bear in mind I'm no experienced machinist so don't expect Careful-like stuff here please

To be continued...

Looks like you're off to a good start.

Have you asked Careful for some pointers? I'm sure he'll be happy to tell you about problems he ran into so you won't have to make those same mistakes.

Good work Reliku, let me know if you need any dimensions or have any questions. Looks like you have a good handle on things based on the progress you've made so far. Well done.

I got excited for a moment and thought careful was posting images of latest vsrx batch... Damn you reliku

But also nice, really nice...

Also, what is that giant heap of devices/wires.

Will post more once I make more progress, which will probably next week

As for details, it's made out of 6063 aluminium, which may be an odd choice but there are some reasons I went for this:

-My mill isn't properly equipped to cut steel
-Aluminium is light
-6063 is cheap and widely available
-Tempered it is almost as strong as 6061 but looks better
-I went with an ID of 27 mm and 3 mm wall thickness which is probably plenty strong enough

Thanks, if I run into something I'll be sure to ask!

The only issue I have right now is that I can't trim down the OD of the barrel section. It needs to be 30 mm to fit in a standard VSR stock so I'll need to trim 3 mm off if I want to fit it in a standard stock. This is a problem because:

-I don't have a lathe myself and while I do have access to one, it's not big enough to turn something this size
-I kinda wanna keep the 3 mm walls because it's nice & strong (and also I kinda like the thick bull barrel look)

I'm probably going to widen the stock a bit to accept a 33 mm barrel rather than a 30 mm barrel. I also plan to mill out the window for the hopup chamber down a bit to make sure the mounting block has no trouble fitting. It screws into the chamber so I'm not too concerned about the wall thickness there.

I also plan to do either a built-in LRB mod or a built-in banana at the end of the barrel. Oh, and a cylinder sleeve

The devices are mostly lipos and chargers. Sorry to disappoint you by the way

Cheers guys, will post more once I get working on it again :)

Milled a slot for the trigger:

Threaded the holes for M3. I kept the stock dimensions because I want to keep the thing as compatible with everything as possible

Trigger test fit:

Milled a window for the chamber and the mounting block:

I had to trim down the front part of the window a bit because the walls of this barrel are a lot thicker than the stock (3 mm as opposed to 1.5 (I think)).

Test fit:

Next up I'll be drilling & tapping holes for the trigger guard, the rail and the stock screw. I also need to mill out a slot for the bolt handle but I wanted to wait with that until after I had fitted it against the chamber to get the nozzle pushed into the chamber all the way, this should push airseal to the maximum

Milled the magwell section flat:

This is to allow the mag to fit properly, again due to the difference in wall thickness compared to the stock barrel

Drilled & threaded screw holes for the rail:

Printed a cylinder sleeve. This is only half of it though, there's another piece further down the barrel to fully accommodate the cylinder.

Test fit:

Milled out a slot for the bolt handle:

Drilled & threaded the remainder of the mounting holes:

Test fit:

Trimmed down the stock to accommodate the 33 mm barrel:

I kept trimming more material off until the mag would fit properly in the magwell... It's a tight fit but it feeds well this way

Complete assembly:

Next up... I'll be making an LRB mechanism at the end of the barrel. Oh, and some barrel spacers

3D printed parts and VSR-X in the same sentence.

I think that's a sin in careful's book. :P

Also nice. :)

That means two things :)

I'm actually surprised you decided to print the sleeve instead of put acetal on the lathe. Isn't the printed model not smooth because of the 3D model's mesh after slicing (and printing)?

And contrary to that... Any chance you could supply me with the .stl file? I want to print one!

It's fairly smooth, and it covers the whole cylinder so it slides pretty well. The reason I didn't make one on a lathe is because this seemed like a much simpler solution

So far it's working pretty well. I'm gonna finish it up on saturday and probably field it on sunday.

Sure, shoot me a PM and I'll send you the STL I used

Reliku, you considered the acetone thing to smooth it out; or is the bolt pull fine as is?

Don't worry, I like you are a 3d printed heathen.
