M96 bone yard resurrection / review

So I was recently at a airsoft swap meet and I met a kid who abused and used a old folder M 96. He sold it to me for 30 bucks intact. The gun needed a new trigger housing, piston and spring kit, some screws to help hold the hop unit, some barrel shims, and a new bucking arm.

It's my third spring sniper. The first two were an M187A, and a TSD SD 702. The 187A was kind of a toy didn't really like it. Parts seemed flimsy. I still own the TSD it's a reliable bar 10 clone fully upgraded.

This rifle seems to have the best build of the three so far.

The manufacturer went all out to copy the AI rifle. They went so far as to put in a simulated spring loaded leveling pod on the rear of the stock. Upon inspection and takedown of this rifle: I determined that that leveling pod was a useless, and removed it.

I also realized that the folding lock mechanism was not robust enough to remain folded if you wanted to carry it that way. So using the space where the leveling pod had been I mounted Straps and a buckle. There were a lot of convenient body screws to help me mount it.

Some of the body screws were missing or had rattled loose.

I went to Ace Hardware and found replacements for them so that the stock cladding would be nice and tight. I then went through the rifle and put Loctite on every screw and every bolt.

I ordered my spring kit and metal trigger box from Amazon. $23 and 28 I got a bucking arm from airsoft Atlanta. $8 I was given some barrel shims for a bar 10 that worked nicely but I had to remove the rubber O-rings to
make them fit. My outer barrel was fluted and didn't have the same circumference.

I went with a NC star, 4x, mil dot, shorty scope. $20 Amazon

Range report:

Bolt is remarkably easy or pull to the rear. Because of the straight stock there is no cantilever effect while charging the rifle. It is smooth and feels light.

Once I got the gun up and running. I zeroed it, and shot 10 for 10 at 100 ft on a 8x10 tin target. That's as good or better than the TSD.

I began to experiment with different weights of BBs. The gun Chrono'ed and 500 ft./s with .20. Good speed - but I'll be trying for 530 ish. It came with a tight bore barrel. It did not like the .40 BBs I was trying or the .43 mad Bulls. It does however love .28 & .32 EF bio. I was able to get hits on a tin target 225ft away- 8 out of ten shots with both weights.

I went ahead and used my arena zero. I described that as: at 150 feet the top most mil dot available is the point of aim.

Because this is a fixed hop rifle, you have to use the predictable ballistic arc, and know at what distance your shots will cross what lines.

Conveniently enough my crosshairs meet targets at 175 feet. The bottom most mill dot is useful for engaging targets up to 225 feet. That's all the range I have at my house. So further shots will have to be tested on the field. My next goal is to get a scope cam built.

Paint:

The rifle came to me all black. Black is great if your out Friday night, but I'm here in Texas playing in broad daylight on Saturday.

We have a lot of dead brush, and our soil is coyote brown or dark brown, so all black sticks out like a sore thumb. I went with a coyote color textured spray paint, with highlights of green, expecting some to scrape off during play exposing the needed contrasts.

That's a nice zombie build, not to mention the price point. I hesitate a bit at the fixed hop unit, seeing as that it probably won't like using a heavier bb if that is the case, but either way, 225 range with .32s isn't bad.

Thank you. I didn't expect this to be as nice as it is. It's a solid medium range springer. And I'm happy with the speed to certain extent because of the nice easy pullback. It gives me a gun my 13-year-old can use when he wants to try out sniping.
Which brings up the fact that I forgot to tell you that I shortened the stock by removing the shim. One of the Bolts is too long to use after you remove it. Just cut it to proper length and tighten down the butt stock.

I also forgot to mention that the tension bolts on the stock for holding the cheekpiece up, had to be JB welded in place to hold proper tension.

I also wrapped the bolt handle above the ball with a significant bolster of tape. I've seen how other M 96 rifles have had their bolt handles reefed off. Watching my son charge this rifle -I realize that the tendency for new-shooters is to grip the ball. The tape shoe makes him grab the stem of the bolt: closest to the bolt. this shouldn't allow him enough torque to injure the bolt handle.

Chronoed at 509 ftps w .20s at the field today. My kiddo ran it all day - his quote " That was one of the best games I've ever had! 14:1 kill to hit ratio for an hour long game." It ran problem free all day for him.

I'm proud - it was his first time running a spring bolt sniper.

SVD - 900 fps

A team-mate owns this zombie killer rifle:
https://www.airsoftguns-europe.com/c...-s-airsoftguns

With BBs .40g BLS is range about 330 feet. He thinks about the heavier balls for target shooting (only): https://www.airsoftguns-europe.com/a...7rd-copper-bls

How to do it is your opinion? Do you have something similar experience?
