Grin WELL M4402D (L96 AWS) Review/Disassembly (w/ Pics)

Hi fellow snipers! I decided that since there are no reviews/disassembly guides for the WELL M4402D, I would review my rifle and give a step by step procedure of how to disassemble the rifle.

Part 1 - The Review

Airsoft Sniper Forum - Alpha-57's Album: My Loadout - Picture

I bought my M4402D here:

WELL L96AWS Sniper Rifle with Scope & Bipod (Olive Drab)

I would like to note that when I placed my order it was in stock, but a few days later I was informed that they were out of stock. They were able to get it to me within 1 month of purchase (annoyed me at the time, but the wait was worth it for me)

1. First Impressions
When I first saw the M4402D, I was eager to own one, seeing as it looked more realistic than other L96 models. The M4402D is a clone of TM's L96 AWS It came with a bi-pod and a 4-16x50 scope which has a range estimating graph reticle that can be illuminated to be red or green.

Scope reticle:

The rifle weighs about 10.8 lbs and has a length of about 4 feet. Most of the internals are metal with the exception of the BB loading ramp and the piston and spring guide. The piston and spring guide will need replacing, especially if you plan to upgrade the spring to gain a higher FPS (stock it shoots about 400 FPS).

2. Internals
Since this rifle is a clone of the TM L96, it is compatible with TM L96 Parts only (so you can't use VSR compatible parts).

The main plastic parts are:
- BB Feed ramp
- Piston
- Spring guide.

When I first shot this rifle, I noticed that it would lob the BB to the target, even with no hop-up, I soon found out that the notch for the hop-up arm was slightly too large. This meant that in order to be able to have the hop-up assembled, the arm would be pushing the hop-up rubber fully into the barrel, causing a tremendous hop with no hop-up. I fixed this by filing down the notch that the arm rested in, therefore allowing the arm to fit nicely into the notch.

Afrter a while (I believe it was 3 months), The stock 1st sear cracked, causing the rifle to slam-fire, as of right now, I only know of two places that sells the 1st sear, they are:
- dentrinityshop.com
- ehobbyasia.com
This was very frustrating for me to find, and it took three months for ehobby to get it back in stock. Once I recieved the 1st sear, the rifle has worked perfectly.

3. Should I get this gun?
Pros:
- Realistic
- Cheaper than a TM
- Reliable with only minor upgrading (so far I've only replaced the 1st sear)
- Came with a good quality scope & bi-pod

Neutral:
- 400 FPS
- Not VSR compatible
- Weight

Cons:
- Plastic internals (piston & spring guide)
- Availability of parts
- Hop-up arm (maybe only mine )
- 1st sear cracked easily

I believe that while it does have its problems, the M4402D is a great rifle. I was able to fix most of the problems easily. It has become my most reliable airsoft gun so far and has served me well in the 8 months that I have owned it.

EDIT: Pics aren't working, cause unknown Links will be provided

Very nice. I bought this exact rifle a little while ago and I love it, and I'm also working on a video review with the disassembly/assembly. Should have it uploaded this weekend.

I dropped a Laylax Z-trig and a cut 170 and it's firing quite well. I'm able to hit a tree at 250' with a flat-hopped stock bucking and stock barrel. Also did a polyurethane one-piece barrel spacer and I love it so far.

How's your hop-up? did it need to be filed down?

Also, are the pics working for anyone else?

The hopup in mine wasn't working at all when I first got it due to the adjuster knob not being installed correctly. After fixing that it worked but wasn't giving enough hop with .40's, so I used a solid piece of oring on the nub and also made a new longer (about 1mm) pin that pushes up on the hop up lever (made it with a piece of the included cleaning rod). Now it works perfectly, and with a flathop I'm hitting a torso sized target at 250ft easily.

Pics aren't working for me either. I'll post my video when I get it finished showing how I did my hopup and other fixes/mods. I'm pondering using an r-hop but its shooting quite well as is.

Also if you're interested, I have my stock tigger mech I can sell you. It's only had maybe 20 shots through it just to chrono the stock rifle before I put my Z-trig in.

Pics still aren't working so I posted links to the pics

Part 2. Disassembly

Since the M4402D is a clone of the TM L96 AWS, the takedown is the same

First, take off the scope and take out the magazine, make sure there are no BB's in the chamber.

Then you will unscrew the two screws holding the receiver to the stock. The first is located in the mag-well:

the second is located in front of the hop-up dial:

The receiver will then lift out of the stock

Turn the receiver over and remove the BB feed ramp and The trigger box

Feed ramp:

Trigger box:

To open the trigger box, unscrew the five screws along the left side

You can then open the trigger box

In order to get to the cylinder you must take off the BB Feeder. To get to it however, you must first separate tthe barrel from the bolt assembly. first unscrew the rail from the bolt housing

there are two screws on the rail

then take off the to rail and unscrew the screw underneath

Unscrew the barrel to find the BB Feeder with a c-clasp. take off the c-clasp and pull the bolt out

use needle-nosed pliers to take off the cylinder head and pull out the piston

To get to the inner barrel, there are two protrusions on the outer barrel, unscrew them, and pull out the outer barrel

When pulling the inner barrel out, beware the springs that are in the hop-up unit

drifter and Carolina_crowned like this.

Well I fixed the links ... But you had too many photo's in one post and I had to separate it!

The above post is not mine, it's Alpha-57's!

Thank you for this, I know how long procedure is to make something like this!

Yes, any parts for the TM AWS will work on the clone. The only VSR-10 parts that are compatible are the bucking/barrels, and the springs (which you will have to trim down to fit). I have a Laylax 170 in mine which I trimmed and it's working nicely and puts her at around 500fps w/.20's.

Fully Compatible tallgrass, anything you could use to upgrade/mod the TM L96 can be used for the WELL.

At least for the TM, the second sear is also compatible with VSR-10.

internal wise looks exactly like my marui aside from some color difference (black vs white hop up chamber) and different set of screws keeping it together
