If you want more "leaves" without using extra burlap try this. I went to my local army/navy store and picked up some torn/used bdu's. Then I took them and cut them christmas tree style.

Sort of like that. Then I tied them randomly into the suit. It worked well to give more flat spots that are still camoish.
Just another idea.

I did not only add them burlap strips for acting as leaves, also to make my ghillie more brownish.

Your camo idea is pretty good, but I think it would stick out to much on my ghillie.
The burlap looks like the jute, so it doesn't really stick out. And I still have to break it in so the burlap will be a bit torn at the edges. I added spray glue so it would not completly loose it's form but stay like burlap.

Pretty nice ghillie suit.

A side note for anyone making one,

Always make sure you use the right mud for your field. Don't use red mud unless that's what blends in at your field.

Question:

Where did you get the net that you put on your ghillie? I've been around in a myriad of different stores and havent found one single store that would sell nets. Tried fishing stores, hunting stores, our version of the home depot ... No luck whatsoever.

The camo netting we have available seems pricey and i might aswell buy a separate ghillie base for the price...

Alright, let me say, I had the same problem, but I found a solution.

Go to an arts and crafts store like Michaels (preferably) or Hobby Lobby. Ask for "Decorative Netting." It's basically fish netting that's strong and it'll work just fine.

Hope it helps bud.

Ghillie making tutorial (Finished)

Hey guys! I've been off the boards due to college, but I've been filling up my summer with getting all my gear back in shape. I left a ghillie half-done, but I was a perfectionist about the whole process so it gives me a great base to finish it off. I'd guess maybe 10 more hours of work tops.

In any case, I'm working on it now and this guide + comments gave me a good brush-up! Thanks pvt13.

Good to have you back zulu!

I put a boonie in my hood so it will stay on my head better and will twist with my head when I look left and right.

I made my hood so it won't need to be attached, the jute hangs down pretty low (down to my shoulderblades) so it covers like a third of my back.

This also gives you the option, if needed, to make it into a veil. Just turn it around and hang the part that covers your back over your rifle/scope.

And glad I could help :)

Haha, thanks! And that's interesting, I was thinking something similar but wasn't sure how it would hold its shape. My hood is made out of netting only (doesn't matter due to attachment at the neck of my BDUs) but if I find a base to attach it to this might work a bit better. :)

Ghillie making tutorial (Finished)

Im following this guide now and i'm at the part where I need to tie the jute on the netting but I have a question: is there a danger about a ghillie being too thick? My individual strands are like 50cm long so about 25cm after being tied. Since the netting is 3x3cm or so, this would mean a lot of overlapping and im afraid, by the looks of it, ill have a 3-4 cm thick layer of jute on my back if i keep going like this
