Making a Ghillie Suit

I use the dental floss to tie the vegetation to the netting of my ghillie.

Back in the day, the SAS would glue on green elastic bands to their ghillies for adding natural vegetation at key points. I've considered giving this a go but have yet to find green elastic. Haven't looked very hard either.

Fuzz, could you post a pic of how you attach yours with floss? I think I get it but I'm a visual learner ;)

Ah sorry tex, just saw this post. I will get some pics up soon with the floss on the ghillie. Small game this Friday so I can get the pics then. It will be with limited veg, as the wood areas just began sprouting weeds.

Nice guide. You use the same exact supplies as me, shoe glue, rit dye, dog/cat hair .

And wow, you floss your netting down. Good patience!

Making a Ghillie Suit

I ordered a ghillie from fuzzy last week and got it today, and let me tell you it is high quality, it doesn't fall apart like store bought ones like to do, and I got a rifle rap too which is also awesome, I was pleasantly suprised when I recieved mine and it was done on a digital woodland shirt, which is exaclty what I had wanted. I obviously only ordered the hat and shirt, and sorry for the picture quality, it was on my phone.

Making a Ghillie Suit

Just wanted to add an idea for sourcing materials - went to home depot today and bought a 3x21' roll of burlap and 570' of jute. Total cost, $20.83. Burlap was outside with the landscaping cloth, jute was with the twine in the aisle with all the rope and ratchet straps.

Anyone have suggestions for netting?

These are old news, but fantastic guides. I used the first two series you listed as a basis for my Ghillie. Though some things they don't address:
The most important thing, you do not need alot of burlap. Period. Less is more, just enough to cover the gaps. You will add lots of veg.

When adding cordura, cover more area on the knees than you think you will need, but only add one layer.

On the hat, if you choose to make a hat instead of a hood, don't let the netting go past the middle of YOur kneck, otherwise you will be pulled backwards by the weight of the burlap. Again, less is more.

Shoo Goo is your friend, but I prefer to mix it with hand sewing for rigity.

I prefer not to add any elastic to my ghillie, instead I take twine and tie the veg onto my ghillie at the field with a simple overhand knot, alot easier and you don't waist time looking for elastic.

hope this helps sum, i'll add more when I think of it.

Just wanted to add an idea for attaching the netting:

I used 10 lb test spectra(woven) fishing line. It is equivalent in size to 4 lb test monofilament but is a flat dark green color and very strong with minimal stretch. I did 2 passes around the netting in each spot, a tied it on the third pass. I did a square knot and a half - basically the first step of tying your shoes times 3. It seems to be plenty tough and definitely strong enough to hold it all together.

For needles I used reduced edge sailmaker's needles. They come in packs of 10 assorted sizes and the larger sizes have really large holes for the thread. Makes it really easy to get the thread through.

If I did it again with a tougher BDU(I used a friend's old worn out knockoff Bdu) I would get a sailmaker's palm to ease the strain on my fingers.

Making A Ghillie Suit

Okay Fuzzywolly, one quick question. About how much did it cost to make the ghillie? I have a very limited budget and I was hoping for around $100 I saw a pretty good suit at Gander Mtn. that got me thinking for this same price...
