Unable to hop .48

A week ago I bought some .48 g kicking mustang bbs for my vsr. I have been playing with .43 g and they hop nicely. My site joule limit is 3 J and thought I could easily hop .48's.

When I arrived at the field last weekend I went first to adjust the hopup for the heavier bbs. I noticed that I had to put a lot more hop to even get the bb to rise a bit. Even then the bb wouldn't lift properly and then I chronoed it and it shot only 2.7 J (3 J w/.43g hop adjusted). Then I turned even more hop and the joules dropped even more and the bb wouldn't still curve up. I ended up playing the games with my old .43 bbs.

I have actionarmy hop up chamber, autobot 70° bucking and 100% airseal. I'm playing in 5-10°C right now. My guess is that the hop up bucking isn't giving enough grip to the .48s and therefore I don't get the bbs to hop properly and lose fps. What are your thoughts? Could a softer bucking help? Or r-hop? Help is welcome.

So, from what I can see, you have everything needed to hop 0.48gm bb's.
My guess is you may have a bit of oil/grease on the bucking.
Sodium likes this.

It sounds like your bucking is too hard, I'd recommend a 60° MR-hop or the new clear 60° Aotuobot(spelled that way to avoid copyright stuff from TransformerŽ️)

Your piston could need more weight, but I'd wait for some more replies before you try that.
And like 1Tonne said, you may have oil or grease inside of your bucking, I'd recommend that you clean it with isopropyl alcohol or dish soap and hot water.

@Silicone At 3J, even an 80 degree bucking should easily provide enough hop.

I had some grease on the bucking but I cleaned it and still have the same problem. I'm considering IR-hop as I've read it can hop heavier bb's.

I recommend for R-hop that you just go on amazon or ebay and get one from Elvishtac.
They are pre-cut, and they have many different kinds for many different barrels.
I don't believe that they have Action Army, but they do have Lambda, which is very good and I would highly recommend it.
Besides that one, I can't remember the others lol

I-R hop is overkill. At the most just go R-hop.
I only use standard buckings in my high end bolties as long patches don't really make a difference. Big springs create enough of a pressure spike that the bb should get enough backspin and accuracy will be about the same as a long patch. But if you are struggling to get backspin, then by all means, try a longer patch/nub.

I cleaned the hop up rubber with alcohol and tested again. Now the fps didn't drop when increasing the hopup but I could only get the .48s to hop a little bit when I had maximum hop up.

Try the stock bucking again.

I tried the stock well hopup bucking but it leaked like hell. Put the autobot 70° back in and also put a stronger spring in. Got 2.7 j with 0.2 g bbs and 3.3 J w/ .48, but when I increased the hopup to get the .48s to hop the joules dropped again from 3.3 J to 2.93 J (max hop and had flat flight). I'm so confused as you say increasing hopup will increase fps, but mine just drops. I've seen some videos on youtube that people can get .48s to hop with 2.2 joules with maple leaf, but I can't get my head around how.

For comparison I tested my M4 @1.3 joules which has r-hop with .28 and it could overhop the bbs over 10 m up when the hopup was in 3/4 setting. I tested my vsr @3 joules with .28 bbs and it could barely even hop them up, maybe 2-3 m up with max hop setting. And saw the loss of 4 m/s again.

Swap out your nub to a skee or panthera (or some other hard nub). I am pretty sure the nub is part of the problem. You could also try a 60 degree bucking.

The Action Army hopup chamber can normally hop 0.48gm at 2.7 joules rather easily.
Sorry. Not sure what the issue is.
