Well, here we are! Tuesday Feb 26 in Canada and a stiff winter day it is! A whole -32C (-26F) out there (without the windchill factored in). It's been like this for the better part of a month and change, and it ain't over yet! It was comforting to see that the North Pole was warmer than here today...it gives us hope that maybe some day we'll get hit by global warming too!:lmao: ..but we're still a long ways off from growing bananas here.

Anyhew, it's funny how sometimes days like this can put you right out of touch with everything. I was watching a YouTube video last night of a game that had just happened in the States somewhere..and there was DIRT!!! Do you know how long it's been since we've seen dirt? Do you know how long it's been since we could run around outside and not have the air crystallize inside your lungs? Plastic breaks here just by leaving it outside for a few hours. hahahaha:doh:

So, we're in serious limbo. We work out inside (except when we're out clearing fresh fallen snow...which happens alot) with the hopes of someday seeing grass again and being able to fire an airsoft BB without it becoming a lethal frozen projectile. Cabin fever has set in so hard that I slowly came to the terrifying realization that I was done my Thompson project!! %$#&!!! I still have two months of winter to go before it even warms up enough to play outside...and that's simply unacceptable. So, without gaming a single mag, I tore it apart again and ordered another barrel for it. I re-did an already perfect shim job, and tidied up the wiring from the mosfet unit with ninja precision. Unsoldered all the connectors and made everything exactly the right length and even cutting the pieces of heat shrink exactly the same.

See folks? The deep cold is nothing to fool with. It messes with your mind. As the body lives in a semi state of shock brought on by age old survival instincts to keep warm while digesting every piece of animal fat in sight, the mind slowly goes into denial thinking it will soon be over and that we got this. Just a little rest, maybe even a sleep. No, this is exactly how people freeze to death in the wilderness...except we do it every single year. At this point even the charred bones in the pork chop are looking mighty tasty...we may even fight the inlaws' dogs for them. Ever watch Wile E. Coyote when he looks at the Road Runner and all he sees is a steaming plate? Yeah...even the dogs look like that. Hey, even squirrels and mice have meat in there...ever been that hungry? The mice carry hanta virus, so bad idea, but squirrel legs taste like chicken wings when breaded and fried.

Anyhew, just letting the old cranium waft away the hours here...while we wait for a magical little package from RedWolf. A small buoy of salvation that signals the warmth of spring, eventually, maybe...if we don't end up having that eternal nap first...:zzz::zzz:

I'm quite sure it is....we're authorities on it up here. It happens every year right about this time. The days start to get a few minutes longer and you watch the daylight slowly fade through frosted windows wondering why Mother Nature tries to kill you year after year...until finally, like the old bull moose, you lie down for a long nap and completely ignore the howling of the wolves...

Shipping guys work, why don't you?
Spoken like someone who has yet to survive the deep cold for extended periods..:lmao:

Listen man, I never said we don't work while this happens. We do...every day. Nothing changes in the daily routine other than a slow deterioration of the psyche. I am fortunate enough at my age to not have to work out in the cold for long stretches anymore, but I promise, I have the frostbite scars on my legs as a badge of honour. It has been cold enough here that when you start moving your rig in the morning the oil in the differentials is frozen solid. Go too fast and that driveshaft will snap clean off. If your brakes freeze, the wheel will stop turning, the tire freezes to the ice and the bead breaks. That's cold... I've undone hydraulic lines on a sawmill where nothing pours out. The oil has turned to grease. hehehe. Or how about when you open up the propane bottle to do a little bbq'ing and the propane doesn't flow because the boiling point of propane is -40C and it stops gassing off. Life is no longer funny when you can't bbq anymore. hahahaha. Then there's all the refinery stories...

Please, share a tale of cold weather regalia with us...

Dawn. As the sun rose above the horizon there was a decided nip in the air. The suns rays as yet had no warmth. Overnight the temperature had dropped by 10C, goosebumps were already forming on my skin as I tumbled out of bed. The desire for the early morning cup of tea had become overwhelming so I staggered into the kitchen. Big mistake. The blast of cold air from the fridge sent me rapidly back into the bedroom to find a pair of shorts and tshirt. Now fully clothed and armed with a steaming hot cup of tea I ventured outside. Not a good idea. The light breeze made the windchill factor nearly overpowering. Deciding the world could wait a little longer for my presence, I went back the warmth of my bed to wait the 30 minutes or so until the day warmed up.

Little did I realise two years ago when I moved here how hard life was going to be. Ah well, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I’ve had -30 days, not constant like you do, but can grasp the experience. Usually only get up to -20 at winter. If there’s no wind I’ll take it any time over 0~ and rain. I’d rather be cold than wet. Well I prefer cold over hot too. Guess I just like cold.
Worst thing about cold is starting diesel in the morning, for somewhat reason, it’s always colder inside the car ♂. And that you can’t work without gloves for long and I’m mechanic, I need my fingers grasping nuts in awkward positions all the time... wait, no, I mean bolts....

Hahahahaha....ah yes, a mechanic. I get it. I've worked as a mechanic most of my life...here, outside, and often at -40C. We're absolutely fine at -20 or so, but when it drops below -30, things go bad. When they drop to -40 and stay there, it gets much, much worse. That's when fluid stops being fluid and that sort of thing. hahahaha. Tonight the forecast is -35C without the windchill. Did I mention the part where ice crystals will form in your lungs if you breathe too fast? Diesels hate this place. But, like you...I do prefer the cold to the wet. Any day. Just a little less severe would be nice. Like I said, if it warms up enough to light the bbq (-20 ish), we'll be happy...by the looks of things not until the end of next week. Maybe...

Like you, we're fine with the odd kick in the frozen pants but winter starts here in September and rolls right through until May. Sure it warms a bit, but we won't see rain until then. It has been around -30 or less for over a month now and it takes its toll. I remember working at the refinery and having to steam the feed lines so that the crude won't freeze in the inlet pipes. A couple of times an hour you have to go inside the shop to break the ice off of your bunker gear. Good times! I also get the grasping of parts (mechanical) with bare hands...man, it ain't for nothing we've got arthritis!!! At least now, being the old dog, I get to work inside...most of the time. Anyhew, as an old dog to a young mechanic, be careful out there. The most dangerous thing you have to face is the stupidity of being young. hee hee hee! I was 23 when I drove the ice roads. I did it for one winter...I was 23 in December going on 40 by the month of March.

Tired Gun, you're a warrior...plain and simple. This morning I was going to have a hot tea, but from the house to the car it had cooled right off...in the thermal mug. hahahaha

ADDENDUM: Just to be clear here, this isn't a deathly contest or anything, just doing a little cold weather venting. Having a little laugh to get through the doldrums of the season. Environment Canada assures us that warm weather is coming and that global warming is real...so are unicorns that poop glitter, right? We'll be fine...this is my 54th Canadian winter (all of them have been), and we got this...just in true Canuck fashion when it gets to this time of year where the sunlight starts to come back yet the air still freezes us from the inside out, it leaves us a tad wanting. Be well, stay safe, and have fun out there..
