Hi everyone. I am a newbie in the Airsoft sniper world and need your expert help.

Let us say that I have $300 to start with. What would be your choice for the starter sniper rifle, and if there is any money left over after that, what would be your first upgrade(s)? (btw please do not include BBs in this budget)

$300 is the initial maximum spend. Later, I may go on to spend more. Right now, however, 300 bucks is all that there is.

Please let your ideas flow. Thanks in advance!!

Also, while you don't need to upgrade the actual hop up unit right away, I would recommend replacing the stock bucking with a maple leaf bucking. They're not too expensive and will make your accuracy 100 times better

Find a boneyard bar 10 and more than likely all that needs replacing is the trigger unit. Upgrade bucking and nub and if you find some left over cash look for the hop up unit.

I'd say go for a type 96, a WELL MB01. Upgrade the barrel group and swap out the piston and you're done for a little over $200. WELL type 96's are great for budget builds, they already come with a 90 degree setup that will last a very long time and the stock spring + an aluminium upgrade piston (UTG makes them in sets with a spring guide and spring included too) lands you at around 500 fps. A budget barrel (madbull steel bull) is around $40 and does well, add in an AA chamber and a good hopup and you're good. You could even buy a JJ type 96 chamber and with some DIY'ing your hopup can be done for under $30. That's $70 for a barrel group that'll give you an effective range of 80-100 yards, depending on the exact setup and the ammo used.

Type 96's aren't the easiest to get to perform well, but they definitely are the cheapest option if you're looking for a budget sniper rifle.

That, or the second hand market, obviously

I can vouch for the JJ Airsoft hopup chamber. A bit finicky, but it does it's job well for such a low price.

I'm still using my stock plastic piston after 4 years. It's on the list of things to upgrade, but it has never been a problem for me. Airseal, on the other hand, is terrifyingly horrible.

ZCI makes affordable barrels in L96 length too. I have yet to really put mine through it's paces, though.

One thing I'll add to Reliku's list: A new trigger assembly. If your L96 comes with a plastic shelled trigger assembly, you need to spend about $30 to get a metal replacement that will last you as long as necessary.

You know, everyone discounts the L96 when it comes to airsoft sniping. It has plenty of aftermarket part support, and you can almost always find whatever part you need in stock at some online retailer. With everyone recommending VSR-10's, it's getting very hard to find the tried and true brand name parts for them. No issues with that in the L96 camp, from what I've experienced

I upgraded an L96 a few years back and had no trouble finding parts (I went with a more expensive set of upgrades). That said, my good friend went with the vsr platform, and didn't have any trouble finding parts either. I honestly wish that I had gone with the vsr as well just because it's lighter and a bit smaller. L96 rifles can way quite a bit and aren't balanced very well in my opinion

90 degree sear / piston. Upgradeable - built like a tank. Not a thumb hole stock.
Unless you absolutely love the m24 stock its not worth it compared to vsr-10 platform said from experience

Your better off going VSR-10 or L96
Either way check out this for vsr-10:
