I’ve been airsoft for about three years now and that entire time I have been running a long range weapon both aeg and spring. Many may say that I don’t have that much experience but I would say I have enough to help out the new guys.
First thing is you want to make sure you get the advice of people here for what gun to get because otherwise you will be spending a ton of time and money before you are invested in the sniper role and you may waste it all.
Also make sure you have some form of camouflage before you start sniping so that when you do choose to join us you can be concealed and not get your butt whipped.
Another important thing is a side arm, I suggest the ASG Valor 1911 that is what currently run and it is fairly cheap (100) and works amazingly for the price.
Last thing, work with your dang team you’ll be screwed if you try to “go in alone” we don’t get individual glory to often as snipers. AEGs will destroy you if you only have a single action rifle no matter what the range is. Your role is to eliminate as many people, preferably by some form of ambush, before they get to the main part of your unit. Your job is to protect your team and take out high level threats that can’t hit you before they get to your team (high level targets may include other snipers, LMGs, DMRs, etc.) taking out these high level targets could save your team from being wiped and give you the upper hand when your unit has LMGs (light machine guns) and DMRs ( designated marksman rifle) and they only have regular infantry.
Above all else though keep concealed as best as you can or else you will be screwed (trust me I have experience it hurts).

For a any new ghillie snipers, I'd like to add on to this. As a ghillie sniper, you should take advantage of your team. Staying near your team, but not entirely with them, will allow you to use them to locate and draw out targets, making sniping close to a shooting gallery. Staying relatively close to a group of AEG players and shooting will confuse enemy team if they can't see you, making them think one of your teammates hit them(the key hear is little movement as well). The sound of their rifles will also draw focus away from your fire. They hopefully won't even know there is a sniper. You will be more accurate than your teammates, and have a longer range. Let me tell you, an instance when the enemy shoots your last AEG guy, comes out from behind a tree laughing, and a bb from no where hits him right in the goggles is the most satisfying thing you can ever do in airsoft. This is far better than sneaking all the way around, finally getting behind the enemy lines, and right as you take aim the game ends( Which is what many snipers do and why people always say snipers never get as many kills and an AEG player!). Also, it is funny when your team realizes their guns can't shoot that far, and wondering how "their" guns can hit them

Indeed, this is happening in most games. But just one sniper's kill-presence, causes big confusion, disorganization, hinders enemy movement and few enemy losses. Especially if the sniper can remain undetected - stealthy - keep shooting enemies, can eliminate an entire team or forbid the use of a crucial area for enemy's movement.
will allow you to use them to locate and draw out targets
Also your teammates can spot targets and report contacts for you. This is a way for a sniper to increase a lot his kills.
Also you can cover your team if you stay at a distance but close to your teammates from flanking enemies.
the most satisfying thing you can ever do in airsoft.
For me the most satisfying is (ghillie working) enemies approaches me, can't spot me and just passing by...

Ghillie's are awesome but a good multicam works really well also.
I used to play mostly in my multicam and my basr was wrapped in multicam also and it would blend right in.

In regards to the amount of hits one person gets, does it really matter if the main objective is to simply win?

If playing online multiplayer (COD) etc getting a high K/D ratio is fun and satisfying, but playing AS it shouldn't be a main factor, as long as your having fun and support your team that's all that matters, and as we all know a well placed sniper can change the game.
