Hey guys, I was thinking about opening my Youtube up to airsofting and it made me wonder what kind of camera do you guys use/recommend for recording scope cams, self cams, ect.. I'm kinda set on the Contour Roam2. If I was to get the ROAM2, I would most likely get two. One for a scope cam, and one for a self cam. The reason I chose Contour is because they are small (Good for mobility purposes), it records 1080p, and I can change the angle in which it records. This is a key factor because in order to do a self cam, you need a rail to mount the camera on (I attached a rail to my stock a while back that is a 45 degree rail). Contour also sells Picitany rail mount which is what my rail is. If anyone has a better suggestion for a camera I would love too hear of it.

P.S. I already have a Go Pro Hero 3, but im not sure if I can use it for my needs. It would also be alot easier if I recorded all on the same platform.

I've said it over and over. Action cameras make dreadful scope cameras, unless you set it up like Dobey which takes $650 and some serious machining knowledge. They have NO zoom, and when I film, I use 12-18x zoom to clearly see the hits.

EDIT: My suggestion? ANY handycam with zoom. Panasonic v500? Cheap and easy.

I'm going to have to disagree, Sheck

I use an alternate way of the Contour, I think I said this in another thread. Instead of buying a new lens to zoom, which I agree makes crap quality, I use a compact scope. This way the contour is looking at a scope, so the quality is the same as what I would be seeing.
But ive been thinking, and 4x zoom doesn't seem like a whole lot. This scope has almost the same lens size, but it is 2-7: AIM 2-7x32 Long Eye Relief Tactical Scope for Pistols and Rifles w/ Rings., Accessories & Parts, Scopes & Optics, Scopes - Evike.com Airsoft Superstore
The only thing wrong with that scope is it would be way too long.

And Sheck, that Panasonic does look like a pretty good camera, and its only a little more than a Contour! The reason I don't want a handheld camera is because the mounts seems to be way more complex, and I don't have software to add crosshairs onto my videos (I use Mac, is there a free software that will allow me to add crosshairs onto videos?). Another problem is that I would be using videos from across platform.

EDIT: Actually, I may be able to get a 45 degree mount for my Go Pro! So I am considering the handheld route.

Thanks! I have a hero 3, but I would like to see through my scope with my own eye ;) I may also use the hero 3 as a self cam to record myself, so I can't really use it for anything else.

This is the progress so far, I have the rail with a hole drilled in it, one scope ring (I need another), and the camera. I still need one scope ring, a screw to hold the camera to the rail, camera protection, and software to add crosshairs onto the video.

So anyone have ideas for how I should go about protecting the lens and back side screen? I have an old scope protector I don't use which is a little bigger than the cameras front diameter, but I have no clue on how I should attach it. As for the screen protection, im still have no idea. Can anyone help?

I use a GoPro Hero 3 Black and a Replay XD Prime X. I'm still getting to grips with the Prime X but the guys I know who have a Contour are keen to change to the Prime X because of its size.

You can also get the Mobius camera for around USD$80 and install a zoom lens (
) This is a very small camera but I didn't like the battery life on it. That said you can run a USB battery pack with it.

This is also a very cool setup for the Mobious cameras

This was a 8 minute job becuSe I have to leave for school in 15 minutes :p I cut the protective lens offa a scope cover, sanded it a little, and use electrical tape to put it on top of the front if the camera. I may try to do this with the screen as well.

I have reached another problem. If I were to insert a crosshair picture off the web, it would have a white background. I will most likely create my own from a texture software I use to texture items in some video games. Once I do that, I hope to be able to insert it on top of the video. I am also getting the screw to attach the camera to the rail today and going to try to add a back screen protection. Will update in a few hours.

If anyone knows of a crosshair picture that won't show a white background ground could you post it here? It would save me 3+ hours if placing pixels..

im probably late to the convo lol but I use my contour roam2 for self shots and kill cam clips. Ive had no complaints as of yet. I really only use it on my M27 when Im not playing a sniper role so any video editing i do to zoom the video I only zoom to about 3x which still looks really good.

Thanks. Well I already decided im using my JVC Camcorder (40x zoom gives me zoomgasm).

I got the screw to hold the camera in place. Its pretty tight, but the camera can still move with a little force. I need to do something about this because i doth want it to move out of place while im running. I could actually record already, but I still need some video editing software, and a crosshair too use.

New update. I got a Mil-dot reticule off google images and edited it. It can see things in the background (like a video).

Edit: I have no software to add the photo on top of a video... My iMovie wont accept any picture for the rest of the time I own this computer, and the only other software I could find was Final Cut, but its $300... Is it really all that necessary to have a cross hair on a sniping video? Could I just use a zoom cam?

Try Lightworks Lightworks: The professional editor for everyone there's a free version but it can be hard to find on the site. I think it's the same installer.

Personally I use Adobe Premier and After Effects but I get a student discount which makes it nearly free.

Cyber link power director pro is like, 80% off over Christmas and is excellent. 30 day free trial too.

Edit, light works is really difficult to use in my opinion. Next to no user interface!
