Well the thought behind this is as follows......

I do a ton of air gun shooting, and many of those barrels are choked near the end of the barrel. To those that don't know what that is ...... Around the last inch or so of the barrel is a slightly smaller diameter than the rest of the barrel. The mechanics behind this is that the pellet will leave the barrel at the exact same spot shot after shot.

I have been thinking about this for some time, but have never really thought of a way to produce the "choking" part of the barrel in a consistent manner. Though with my lathe I am thinking that this may be a possibility.

The main problems that I am seeing with this are ......

1. With the hop up it may provide to be more troublesome than the normal barrel.

2. If the choke isn't consistent I may still get rounds going all over the place.

3. Finding a specific ammo that will work with the barrel. To big of a round and you will just wedge the bb at the end of the barrel. To small of a bb and you really won't have any change.

The pluses of the project....

1. More consistent shot patterns.

2. May work like a mini LRB barrel ??

3. Easier to get the bb to go where you want it to go.

I am just thinking about it at this point, and I would like to hear what you guys think of this. I know a few people here shoot air rifles as well, and would enjoy their thoughts as well.

***Thread about this topic.....

Not a good topic, as everyone goes off on a tangent, and there is really nothing said about the choking process.

... don't forget that pellets in air rifles are rifled, airsoft has hop up. I would think that choking the barrel would kill your back spin/seriously deform the BB...
My thought as well. It sounds like you would get the equivalent of a 6.01 without the consistent contact area.

That is what I was thinking, but then again, I have a few spare barrels around that I can play with.

I plan on putting it into my CA M24 with a PDI hop up. Will use the same bucking on each test, and will see what happens.

Bit late I know but I've been away working over xmas......

Don't waist your time chap, it doesn't work :(

There was a thread on airsoft mechanics about this very subject ages ago (if you can be arsed to look for it it does make for an interesting read), and iirc the conclusion was no gain all pain due to physics, different system for projectile flight etc etc :'(

Yeah, there are some. HS5 is pretty understanding, but I'm sure he gets tired of the questions as a mod. Usually I just lurk around over there and leach information, especially since there usually isn't that much I can add or the threads turn into a flame fest.

Yeah, ASM does that, tons of theorizing and (by comparison) little production. Sometimes I get the feeling that they think themselves out of ideas.
I agree, lots of windy protracted threads. Its refreshing to know im not the only one who goes there not unlike the library to check out some information and then promptly leave.
