I ended up getting a TAC 41. Between posts here and other sources, it seemed like the best initial investment. Maybe in the future I'll decide to go the full build route and get a VSR platform. The idea of building one basically from scratch is still very appealing.

"put it into your shopping cart and be done" is a myth in airsoft sniping world. it doesn't exist.
This is now a myth in and of itself. Even three years ago, if you had the money to burn, you could get something that performed well 'OOTB'- the SRS, the SSG24 (though it is fashionable to hate on it), a number of people offered VSR upgrade services and would ship an already upgraded rifle to you. There were also a number of decent prebuilt hpa systems.

Now, with the advent of platforms such as the SSG10 and the Silverback TAC41, there is the opportunity for people with lower budgets to get into the sniper game with minimal effort. If you don't get a lemon, these rifles perform very well out of the box.
no OOTB rifle will be ever hope to match the performance of a well tuned rifle
To some extent this is true, however, a number of rifles match the capabilities of the more 'middle class' upgraded VSRs- and really that's all you need.

The real myth is that you will never have to disassemble your rifle. In the end, you will have to perform maintenance. The idea that you will never have to tech on your rifle (as some people are wont to say) is a complete lie.

Still, I hold that a preupgraded sniper is not a bad idea. It is somewhat easier to maintain things than upgrade things in my experience. It is a fairly easy way to get into the world of working on your airsoft guns. Yes a T11 or EMG Fieldcraft are nice platforms to work with, but if you aren't that sure of yourself, it can feel a bit like being thrown in the deep end.

no OOTB rifle will be ever hope to match the performance of a well tuned rifle, especially if said person took the time to know their own rifle's quirks. no matter what you buy, you WILL ALWAYS ended up upgrading it if airsoft sniper's role really stick to you. might as well get the most supported platform for that. that's is why VSR compatible platform is still king today.
1. You can literally take an SRS and TAC (as well as the SSG24) to a field with a decent scope and be competitive enough in the field after hop up tuning (for the record, I literally did just that before). The time where no stock rifles can competitively compete with a tuned rifle is already so long gone, it itself has become a myth, when the workings and tech of airsoft rifle is already well developed - Airsoft is no rocket science.

2a. Why have a hundred different kind of upgrades if your stock rifle comes with the stuff you absolutely need stock? In a VSR, you need the AA chamber, a steel cylinder, a set of zero trigger, better pistons, etc......which the TAC for instance already has that completely stock on top of a rotary hop adjustment wheel as well as lefty compatibility.
2b. What is a hundred different kind of upgrades good for if most of the brands either are total shit, downright downgrades or is incompatible with each other, when the stock rifle not only has well designed internals stock, it also has official aftermarket support to fine tune or just waste money on?

I'm not dissing the VSR or building rifles for shits sake but this blind support over a platform for reasons that can't quite stand up to scrutiny nowadays is sickening.

I don't really like the VSR anymore as it just seems to be a money pit compared to everything else.
If I were to buy another springer, which I likely never will, it would be one of the new things like the the ArchWick .300 blackout thing, the SCOUT, or maybe the TAC. The SCOUT I think would be a better option from the sounds of it, but only just. If the TAC didn't have murderous tendencies when it comes to buckings, it may be where it's at.
The SCOUT and .300 blackout thing are just naturally cooler than the TAC ever will be, but it's a solid performer by the sounds of it nonetheless.

Anyways, I think that the VSR is still king as it now has the SSG10 making it more popular and generally way better than all other VSRs, but it's not a very cool gun as it's just something you can buy, and as it's so affordable, everybody has them. That may be the main draw to the VSR actually, being unique, but the VSR is very mayo unless you're out there making badass parts for them like Masada, Corriander, Fynn something or other, or you're hacking them to bits and making them awesome like Blind Sniper. They still remain a great choice, but they are really no longer cool anymore.

If the vsr didn't exist previously and was released today (in the stock tm spec form) it wouldn't be looked at considering the amount that needs replacing to be designed differently to work well at most places joule limit.

It was king for a long time but not because it was designed well (it wasn't) but because aftermarket redesigns have it the ability to perform well.

Most people weren't using a vsr essentially after all the work was done to them to be honest.

If I get another sniper it will be a tac41 next loved the one I shoot awhile ago was so nice to use.
