DMR Best brand for upgrades?

I'm considering M4s or M16s. Which brand has the best ones?
I've heard KWA's are a pain to deal with so not that. Classic Army guns are also a pain in the ass due to part compatibility issues, and Tokyo Marui has plastic externals. I'm going for a gun with great externals and upgradability. The internal parts don't really matter as I'll eventually completely upgrade them

I've never really done any work on any AEG's but I've taken apart and reassembled my old EBR. And hell, I have to learn at some point. So a gearbox that isn't too much of a bitch to work with is Ideal.

An example of great externals would be the King Arms Full metal Colt Licensed M4, or the G&P M4 with the SEAL Skull Frog engraving.

The brands I'm considering are:
-King Arms
-G&G
-G&P
-VFC

I like my M4s with a standard size barrel. No CQB. I prefer standard railed 6in. If not I'll buy the G&P M4 front set. The stock doesn't really matter. I'd replace it with the Magpul UBR stock.
I like my M16s with Full stocks only. M16 I like railed with standard rails none of those weird looking RAS.
So far I've seen 4 that I really like.

Which has the best Externals and the best upgradability?

As far as I know, classic army is identical to marui, but it's from metal, and I had no compatibilty issues on my CA g3, which uses ver 2 gearbox too. So I doubt you'll get issues with CA.

CA proline series guns are also one of my favs.Good externals, durable, and easy to work on.
CA uses a slightly off spec GB case than the Marui standard,so some GB's will require moding to fit inside CA receivers,or receiver moding. In addition, some helical gearsets other than CA wont fit CA GB's without modification to the GB case.
Ive been told for years that CA has always been a bitch to work with.

There for a couple of years CA allowed there quality to fall off,and it gave them a bad rep in the process. As of now there quality has improved, and there once again a good brand to buy.Im speaking of the Proline series, the Sport series I have no experience with, but everything ive read is pretty negative.
I had no interest in any sportlines anyways. I'm trying to find the best possible externals. And I'm no tech and have no tools for any modifications more than sanding, so CA is a no go.
G&P & VFC's would be my choice.

I own a few KWA's. Worked on a few more. Externally, they take well to a lot of higher end kits. Internally not 100% compatible with TM standards, but my experience with KWA's has been a really good one. Not trying to sell you on KWA's, but they aren't a pain to deal with.

I have a couple G&P M4's and after dealing with internal parts, wiring and dust covers on them, they a very nice set ups.
I own a G&G M16a2 converted into a M733 and it's exceptionally accurate.
Externally body quality is nice, but G&P has more details.

I use to own a Classic Army M15. Sold it in parts... It was a 2007-08 CA M15. Maybe poor quality control? Gun shot pretty well after replacing the barrel, hop up chamber. It's when I tried putting in aftermarket internal parts I had issues. Gun never seemed to want to accept upgrade parts. Stock form at 350fps it got me on the field and did well. That experience pretty much keeps me from even considering a Classic Army again.

VFC's - I've seen a few around. Messed with a ECHO1 platinum M4 which VFC makes. Currently I'm considering selling my collection and going VFC/P* Fusions.

I have decided to build my gun completely from scratch. Body, Stock, front assembly, rails, and the gearbox too. I'll be doing G&P externals, but thanks for the replies guys.
Actually I'm using a proline CA M15A4 X-series and I'm more than pleased with it, decent accuracy (stock hop up and bucking) and rof on a 9.6v battery ( I don't like lipo's very much).
Actually I love CA because of that gun!

Now I'll have to buy a CA G3 for my DMR project!

All are good choices, although i do not know alot about VFC. King Arms, G&G and G&P's m4's are highly compatible with any V2 parts. The g&g m14 has a proprietary type gearbox although. (It uses V2 and V3 gears) G&P m14s are TM compatible

It will cost you 3-4 times as much to go this route as it would to buy a good gun and upgrade it.Your better off buying a broken gun and building from there over buying individual parts. Its not a good idea unless you have bottomless pockets,or a VERY long time in which to build the gun with.
