Echo 1 ASR Knowledge Compendium

First off I'd like to attribute this information to bobgengeskahn, Ronin055, and the many other helpful people on here and on airsoftforum.com. None of this is my own work; I just happen to have read about the Echo 1 ASR for 30 hours so far this week.

What I found is the lack of an "all you can eat" collection of information for this rifle. My goal is to provide that. Moderators, please feel free to edit this post.

ECHO 1 ASR - http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_113&products_id=6572 - $100-115 USD

About the base rifle:
The Echo 1 ASR is a rebrand of the WELL MB06. On the lower end of the price range for sniper rifle platforms, it is generally accepted that upgrades are required to field this weapon in a war. This is also one of the few bolt action sniper rifles (BASR) that can be easily modified to a left-handed rifle.

Are there common issues?:
The number one reported issue is a loose stock. This can be corrected by disassembling the receiver and tightening the stock from the inside.

What parts should I upgrade?:
Here is a list of upgrade parts, based on a mash-up of bob's, Ronin's, and various posts I have found. I'm adding in 'options' so you can play with your price range. When it comes to quality though, you get what you pay for.

Compatibility explained by bob:
"Cylinder, trigger, piston, spring, guide etc. are APS2. Hop up, barrel, spacers, outer barrel threads are L96."
Upgrade Kits: $33-
Echo 1 - This kit comes with "an upgraded metal spring guide, upgraded metal piston, an upgraded spring, and a torque absorbing bearing set." - $33

Inner Barrel: $35-74
What to look for? Steel and brass are superior materials than aluminum.
Prometheus 455mm / 6.03mm EG Tight Bore Barrel for Airsoft AEG (AK47, AK47S Length) - $74

LONGER BARRELS, REQUIRE SILENCER/BARREL EXTENSION

MadBull Ver. 2 Precision Inner Barrel for M16 (509mm) - $35
http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?products_id=1231

Why nothing longer?
vindi says: "It has long been accepted in the spring powered bolt action world that anything over 509mm is pointless and actually causes the rifle to be less accurate"
Barrel Spacers: $18-20
You can also make your own if you are on a budget.
Hop Up Chamber: $85
Hop Up Bucking: $5-16
Spring: $15-20

Why nothing more powerful (>170)?:
bobgengeskahn says: "I would also recommend that people NOT put anything over a M150 or M170 spring. I have a M210 in mine and have successfully torqued/bent my bolt handle."
Scope: $45-70

What DIY upgrades should I perform?:
Should I "swiss-cheese" my piston?
vindicareassassin replies: "For all those of you who are thinkin 'Oh, I'll Swiss cheese my piston as it will be lighter and spring forward easier', stop it! Leave such mods to the go faster full auto queens, for a DMR it is a good thing to have the extra weight. You will need the extra weight in the piston to help to shift the heavy weight BBs you should be using, as nothing gets things moving like a heavy object with some inertia behind it. "

I'm glad you both are back! Now I have two ASR EXPERTS to help with my questions! :-D
I haven't really done anything to my ASR to improve the feel per se. I painted it and usually run with the bipod on, so it
Thanks bobgen!

Also, I'm investigating slapping a tbb in there, searched a bunch, but I keep having the same question: To install a TBB, do I first need to install the PDI hop chamber, and then add an AEG barrel? Can I simply use a asr specific tbb?

thanks :)

EDIT: And your gun is more than 7 lbs?? I just checked mine, and it's only like 4, loaded and with a scope! I don't have the bipod though, maybe that contributes to the lack of heavyness?
Maybe, it's pretty close to 7 but the bipod doesn't make up 3 pounds. The stock barrel is cut for an L96 with an L96 hop up unit. The Madbull barrel that Echo1 says works with it is a little long and its 6.03
hmmm.... really? in all my searching, all I came across was this barrel on many sites: http://www.godfatherairsoft.com/Madbull-Airsoft-455MM-6-01mm-Ultimate-Tightbore-Ba-p/3572.htm

is it really a 6.03, even though it says it's a 6.01?

Thanks again
Madbull makes both 6.03s and 6.01s
I would suggest that you dont, do-not, upgrade the barrel while you have the stock hop up in the gun.

I can almost 100% guarantee that the stock hop-up unit will go to pot.

Upgrade to a PDI, and then get a nice AEG barrel to go in your gun.
Hmmm I can definitely do that, thanks Ronin.

Also, as an update, I took some old 4mm metal bb gun bb's and superglued them to the inside of the foreguard, and the results are awesome. everything feels way more solid now, and it didn't add too much overall weight to the gun. I totally recommend it!
I've been researching these quite a while before considering buying them. I was just wondering, has anyone actually used the angel customs upgrade kit in the ASR? I've gone about 13 pages deep into this forum, done multiple searches on other forums, and used google, and I hadn't heard much about it, or the angel customs parts in general.
I've been wondering the same thing. And PS, make an intro post
Would it be possible to throw other M4 style stocks or even a full stock? If so, how would O do it and do any mods need to be made?
You can put other M4 stocks. Just pull the piece down that you use the slide the stock back and forth and it should slide right off. I've seen people put Magpul stock on, really and M4 stock should fit, but I don't think a full stock would fit.

Okay cool. And what about the pistol grips? Could I get a magpul?
Not too sure about the pistol grips. It may take a bit of modification to fit others; somebody would have to clarify. I do think a different pistol grip and stock would completely change the look of the rifle for the better though.

EDIT: Here's a pic I found on google of what the rifle looks like with a different stock.

If you don't like the pistol grip, try something like this:

I think a PSG-1 style grip with a nice stock would look pretty cool too.

What stock is that?
I'm not sure, it looks like it's made by Magpul though. I'd look through the M4 stocks that they make, and you'll probably find it (or an even better one).
