Echo 1 ASR Knowledge Compendium

First off I'd like to attribute this information to bobgengeskahn, Ronin055, and the many other helpful people on here and on airsoftforum.com. None of this is my own work; I just happen to have read about the Echo 1 ASR for 30 hours so far this week.

What I found is the lack of an "all you can eat" collection of information for this rifle. My goal is to provide that. Moderators, please feel free to edit this post.

ECHO 1 ASR - http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_113&products_id=6572 - $100-115 USD

About the base rifle:
The Echo 1 ASR is a rebrand of the WELL MB06. On the lower end of the price range for sniper rifle platforms, it is generally accepted that upgrades are required to field this weapon in a war. This is also one of the few bolt action sniper rifles (BASR) that can be easily modified to a left-handed rifle.

Are there common issues?:
The number one reported issue is a loose stock. This can be corrected by disassembling the receiver and tightening the stock from the inside.

What parts should I upgrade?:
Here is a list of upgrade parts, based on a mash-up of bob's, Ronin's, and various posts I have found. I'm adding in 'options' so you can play with your price range. When it comes to quality though, you get what you pay for.

Compatibility explained by bob:
"Cylinder, trigger, piston, spring, guide etc. are APS2. Hop up, barrel, spacers, outer barrel threads are L96."
Upgrade Kits: $33-
Echo 1 - This kit comes with "an upgraded metal spring guide, upgraded metal piston, an upgraded spring, and a torque absorbing bearing set." - $33

What DIY upgrades should I perform?:
Should I "swiss-cheese" my piston?
vindicareassassin replies: "For all those of you who are thinkin 'Oh, I'll Swiss cheese my piston as it will be lighter and spring forward easier', stop it! Leave such mods to the go faster full auto queens, for a DMR it is a good thing to have the extra weight. You will need the extra weight in the piston to help to shift the heavy weight BBs you should be using, as nothing gets things moving like a heavy object with some inertia behind it. "
Teflon Tape Seal Improvement:

Okay cool I definitely think I'm going to pick up a new stock after I get this thing shooting consistently straight. I really like the CTR stocks.
I'd recommend bringing the ASR to your local airsoft/gun shop and fitting the stocks before you buy. The buffer tube (what the stock mounts to) is not the standard AR tube.
Any word on whether or not the echo 1 kit is garbage? I'm thinking the first upgrades I do will be an upgrade kit, either the echo or the little pricier one if it is significantly better. I will be ordering the PDI hopup unit as well shortly.
Ronin used the Echo 1 Kit and liked it.

If you order the PDI hopup kit, make sure to buy a nice AEG barrel too.
The upgrade kits seem pretty decent for the money. Obviously not as good as Laylax or PDI, but you'll be saving a good bit of $.
Okay so if I get an upgrade kit, do I need to get a new trigger assembly as well or can the stock one handle the heavier springs?
No one has reported trigger assembly failure from using the Echo 1 Upgrade Kit. I don't know of anyone that currently has the Angel Customs Kit installed to vouch for that one.
I thought the trigger units for this rifle were proprietary?

They definitely look like they are but sI really hope they aren't.

And thank you to all who have helped me with all my ASR questions. I hope I can learn fast and then be able to give back by helping other new snipers.
Hey guys, I am getting ready to order a new barrel due to bending the crap out of my old one. Unfortunately, it's just going to be a Madbull Version 2. Would you recommend the 509mm or the 455mm (stock length)?
I've heard mixed reviews between the two. I chose the 455mm to add a functioning (permanent to be legal) silencer should I desire.
Well I've got the rifle and I'm in love with her! I think the guy I got it from may have already installed a new hopup unit, as he's using the mad bull black python TBB, which I'm pretty sure is an AEG barrel which isn't compatible with the stock hopup if I remember correctly. It came with 2 hopup units, and they are slightly different from each other. The gun perform overall very well even though it's mostly stock other than the barrel and possibly the hopup unit. I'll update it as I upgrade.
I have opened the trigger box and found that one of the sears is proprietary and the sear that pulls the piston back is l96.

I have baught an angel custom piston with a guarder piston head and I have to say I like it a lot. The seal of the guader piston head is excellent and the piston seems very sturdy. If the quality of this piston is the same for the upgrade kit I don't think you have to worry too much.
Dont everyone say longer barrel more range??
I saw a review that shower the 3 version WE g39 GBBR crono and the one with the shorter barrel the G39c shot the hardest and the longer one the slowest FPS?!?!

Can you give me a bit oninfo on this aspect, I'm trying to get a nice sniper rifle : D
Longer barrels usually give you higher FPS, until the volume of the barrel is too much for the cylinder volume to handle, and you get a drop in FPS.
With the ASR cylinder I wouldn't go over a 455 IMO.

@Madhellsing: Spend some more time reading around here and specifically searching for threads on barrel length. Longer barrel very rarely = longer range. Also, comparing GBBRs to spring bolt guns or AEGs is like apples and oranges.
1 year update: A year after I bought my ASR and the gun is still very solid.

Over 525FPS with the Echo 1 kit and no trigger or sear problems to report.

#93 rubber O-ring (~$1.50) fits perfect in the Echo 1 upgrade piston and gives me a much better seal. After spending a few hours at my local hardware store and trying a number of different sizes this O-ring was a small victory for me, even if the staff did think I was crazy.

The buffer tube is commercial spec AR. I have real steel Magpul MOE stocks in both mil-spec and Comm-Spec. Mil-spec is super tight but can be jammed on. Comm-spec fits how it is supposed to.

I am still using the stock barrel and hop-up, and with .30g madbulls and I can usually hit any player I shoot at.

After my 1 year anniversary with this gun I have finally decided to keep it for the long haul. Now I am researching which tbb barrel to go with.

There are three aftermarket companies that come to mine that makes stronger bolt handles, PDI, SPEED, Guarder.

I snapped the pot metal bolt handle on my Echo1 M28 with a M150 spring.

Not for the ASR. Nobody really makes anything for the ASR.

Is the cylinder not compatible to APS-2 which is CA M24?

Does the ASR need upgrades? Are there a lot of ASR owners?
