So it has been a long time since I have posted anything. I am kind of bored and figured I would write about my rifle.

I have been using a stock UTG MK-96 (with all the DIY mods like teflon tape, spring spacer, barrel spacers, and the likes.) With the spring spacer It was shooting a little hotter then stock spring fps, just enough to put me on top of anyone using a bone stock bolt action. I was happy with the accuracy and range of .3 bb's. After getting the hop up and scope right where I liked, I had a hard time deciding to upgrade it. I was worried I wouldn't get it tuned quite as perfect or mess everything up. Im sure some of you know that feeling.

I read up a lot on the PDI hop up and saw many mixed opinions on it. The reviews were always one sided. It was either described as too much of a hassle and a waste of money or a godsend to sniping as a whole(maybe a little bit of exageration
.) The main draw to it was the use of aeg barrels and buckings. I recently saw the PDI hop up in stock at airsoftatlanta. due to the fact that it is only in stock in the US once every decade I decided to buy it.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Installing it required some mechanical knowledge and a little bit of luck. The arms were in need of a little shimming to increase consistency of hop on the nub. I used gearbox shims and sanded them down a little to fit. I put one on each side of the arms. The little silver bar that the 2 hop arms are attached to slid out to easily so i filled the holes on the sides with a little glue so it could not go anywhere (not that it would once it was inside the barrel anyway.) I also purchased the madbul blue bucking and a madbul inner barrel. Sadly the inner barrel didn't ship due to it being out of stock. I instead used a longer 650mm madbul barrel that i had laying around.

I have also been looking at is a trigger system. Not wanting to spend $200+ at the moment for one I decided to risk the new airsoft GI heat treated trigger/piston sear. So far it seems to work alright. The only bad thing is that my trigger pull is much heavier and will take some getting used to. We will see if it lasts for the long run.

The last part I put into my gun was the UTG upgrade kit with piston, spring guide and spring. I was aiming for 570-600 fps with .2's and then shooting with .4's. I have not had anywhere to chrono yet so I do not know where I stand.

After all parts were installed I had a harder bolt pull which makes sense and like I said before a harder trigger pull. I used my .3's for some non zeroed in shots and quickly realized that i need a heavier bb. My range was also notably longer. I sadly was not able to test accuracy to a T yet. I was looking into trying the madbul .4's or the we precision .4's. Any thoughts on those bb's?

Anyway, I got my airsoft fill for the day by typing this up. Any comments or anything are welcome and Keep Shooting everyone.

I upgraded the sears in my box, only to have the shell itself snap. It cracked mostly around where you tighten the screws in (trigger box into receiver). However, since you have done some modification, the reinforcement should help keep the box together. Mine lasted almost two years, and thats without any modifications.

But like Hidden said, the box gave out before the sears did.
However, with modification, I can see the box lasting for quite some time.

That is where i see a little bit of wear. Hopefully I will be as lucky. From what i have heard you can get a hold of leapers and they will send you a new one on the cheap or free? At least this is what i've read a few different places. I just hear stories of pdi and laylax triggers breaking as well. If I spent $200+ on one and it broke, that would be about the end of my sniping career lol. From searching around I have only found an upgraded trigger in the states at Airsoft Atlanta for $210.

I was luckily able to snag a laylax zero trigger for $100. However, I see where you are coming from. Leapers will send you replacements if under warranty. I believe you get them for free if the part broke while the rifle is still under warranty. If you simply want to have some more spare parts, and buy, say...three pistons and a few cylinder heads, then you have to pay for them. However, they only will let you buy their parts if your rifle is still under warranty. Or if you get someone nice from Leapers who will let you buy the parts even though the warranty has expired.

That's how I think it goes, but am not 100% positive.

P.S. Watch your "I"s. ;)

You know, I've always wondered if I would be able to draft up an external replacement box for the L96. What is it that fails? Where it mounts or the actual casing itself?
My friend and I are experimenting with this, we found that the outer box will snap it two places. The first is by were you attach it to the gun, the two screws. The second is near the sear that holds the piston, this occurred only when we put a really heavy spring in it.

What I would like to know is what modification did you do to the box to make it stronger.

Sorry about the "I". I missed a few capitalization's. Comically enough, I aluminum taped the crap outta the box. And its working quite well. And a zero trigger for $100?!?! was it used and you got it for a deal ? I would kill for one for that price

I would like to see a pic of that, more or less just to see how you did it.

It was one hell of a deal.

And as long as the modification works, thats all that matters.

And Hidden, I can back up what you said as well. The box on mine cracked at the place were you tighten the screws. Another box I had cracked near the piston sear. These are the two major weak spots.

I ran across this on another forum, but felt it was worth a mention here on this thread topic; Pyramid air will be selling metal replacement trigger boxes for the L96 series spring rifles:

http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Metal_Trigger_Box_Assembly_for_Type_96_Sniper_Rifles/3391

The trigger box is listed as pre-order for now... Although not as good as a zero trigger, it would make a suitable replacement for the plastic trigger box.

WELL is listed as the mfg, but it was pointed out in the other forum that the actual mfg is TSD... don't know that it matters, but it is always nice to know the source in order to forum a decision with regards to quality.

Heck for $25, can't beat that price.

Could be a good base for a modded box as well.

There was a post awhile ago that had some custom trigger mechs on it. Was like figoi or something. Will see if I can't find it, but they were selling for like $75 or so.

Its called fijo's custom ( http://www.fijocustom.com/ ), there triggers are all made by hand, and the trigger them self's are custom as well.

Also, the well trigger box, the one dragon posted has been back ordered for about 8 months now, so ya.

That metal triggerbox would be wonderful! If it was ever in stock. I guess ill keep my eye on it. If it ever is actually back on sale, please post up asap. I think a large number of us who dont have zero/ v triggers would be interested and quite possibly fight over them. Oh and if anyone is selling a zero/ v trigger for maruzen aps2 mk-96 i would be willing to look into it :). And thanks everyone for all the enjoyable responses haha.

I have not contacted this vendor yet, but they are lsiting the metal trigger assembly for $30:

Worth contacting them to see.

On a side note, I ordered a TSD SD97 (WELL MB05 rebrand) from Pyramid Air, and it has the metal trigger box installed, so in another week I can at least post a small update about this part if anyone is interested in it.
