Hi everyone, my name is John, and I am very new to airsoft. So new in fact I have never even played. My main hobby is precision rifle shooting and shooting firearms in general. Until recently I was kind of clueless about airsoft other than knowing it existed. This past summer I was able to shoot an airsoft gun for the first time and I was kind of shocked at how well it shot. I was expecting at best poor paintball gun performance. Apparently airsoft guns are nothing like the orange plastic guns that shot yellow rubber bbs my friends and I had as kids in the late 80s haha.

I had a blast shooting it and I thought airsoft guns might be a great way for me to scratch my target shooting itch without the hassle of going to the range or annoying my neighbors. The added bonus of being able to purchase replicas of some of the real firearms I would love to own but are out of my price range or hard to get ahold of is nice too. Turns out there is a pretty active field near me so I will probably give playing a try too at some point but right now my main focus is yard pinking.

I like to tinker with firearms but when I started learning about the internals of airsoft guns I was a little intimidated by how complicated they seemed. So with my first airsoft purchase I wanted to go with something I wouldn’t have to mess with much internally and I ended up getting a TM Scar Heavy. I did mess with it externally though.

With my second purchase I wanted to go with something I could start to tinker with inside so I purchased a LCT LC-3A3. I’ve been gradually upgrading parts of it as I learn more about the internals of AEGs. I don’t have a picture of it right now because it is currently in a bunch of pieces on my workbench as I get ready for the next upgrades.

When it comes to precision rifle shooting, bolt action is what I do most. Here is a pic of my current favorite firearm, my CZ457 I built for competition. So naturally I’m interested in airsoft bolt action snipers and that led me to finding this excellent forum.

I haven’t decided what my first sniper will be yet and because I’m still not super comfortable with working on the internals so I’m looking to get a rifle that will be decent out of the box. The ones i’m looking at are Tac41, Modify Steyr Scout, SSG10, and SSG96. Advice on any other rifles out there I should take a look at would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there! The first time I opened an AEG I was also intimidated. I remember how I have both arms exhausted like I just did a heavy exercise with them, and I was really surprised I didn't mess it up considering I don't even look at any tutorial other than how to separated the gearbox from the receiver itself.

Anyway, as Silicone said, all of your choice are solid bases but I think Scout has the least amount of improvements left to be done. So if you want something you are able to tinker a lot, SSG10 and TAC should be a better choice.

If your new to the sport and have the budget tac41 is great entry point, sturdy reliable, doesn't need work performance wise but can be worked on if your interested still.

All of the rifles you listed will work though.

Don't be afraid of taking apart an Airsoft sniper rifle they are pretty simple.

The LCT shouldn't really need any upgrades. The only things it would need is a Mosfet, shimming, new grease, and a new bucking and nub. Unless you like lighting money on fire for "upgrades" you likely do not need.

As for bolt actions, for a first bolt action, TAC41. Though if you want a more "realistic" bolt action, then a gas sniper rifle would be the closest. However those come with their own brand of bullshit to deal with, which most do not have the skill, knowledge, and/or patience to deal with and just press the "HPA Easy Button".

Anyway TAC41. Won't need immediate upgrades and will perform well right out of the box. (After a cleaning, lubing and adjusting the hopup, should be the first things you do when you get a airsoft gun.)

Thanks everyone for the the replies! After your suggestions I was leaning towards the Tac41 and than I ended up finding it on sale so that sealed the deal for me.

I'm upgrading more as a learning experience than for the need but yeah I get what you're saying. Although I think my barrel definitely needed to be upgraded/replaced. The barrel is supposed to be decent in this but the one in mine has some nasty machining marks on the inside. I'm not super familiar with barrels but the other two I've stuck a bore scope down were smooth as a a baby's bottom.

Huh, weird. Usually LCTs have great barrels, but lemons do exist. lapping might fix that depending on how severe it is. But already changed it so no big deal.
