Try finding either a TM L96 for cheap enough (good luck with that) or get a G&G G96 gas powered L96. The TM will probably need more than $100 in upgrades, and getting the G&G will require you to use some of your upgrade budget to get the gun and gas. The advantage the G&G G96 has is only in the fact that it shoots 500 FPS out of the box, while the TM shoots around 300 if memory serves correctly. Both have realistic mag placement and are sort of in your price range. If you want to go really high up on the price scale, try finding a pre-ban Tanaka L96 or getting an ARES L96.

Welcome to the forum! Be sure to make an intro post and read over the rules set.
Aside from that, I'd recommend getting a UTG l96 or a JG vsr10. The UTG l96 runs about $170 and the JG vsr10 around $120. They're both pretty good base guns that can be upgraded in to pretty solid rifles with the right parts. And with your budget, you can get started with some good upgrades since you won't be spending as much on the actual rifle.

I'd say to first start with upgrading the hopup unit and inner barrel, these will help with the rifles accuracy. Theres also lots of DIY mods and homemade upgrades you can do to your rifle to make it preform better. There's threads on the forum with more info on these.

For this you are either going to need to go with a gas rifle, or a TM L96

Any rifle can do this with the correct amount of upgrades, and parts
Thank you in advance

This is really going to be hard....unless you are willing to buy used or change your options a little bit.
If you are willing to change your options a little bit send me a pm and I may be able to help you out with the rifle that I have.

Let me tell you something:

First, you have to think seriously do you want to snipe in airsoft. Its much harder than it looks like. Really. It much much much much easier to play with an AirsoftElectricGun than bolt-action sniper.

Second, you have to choose do you want a VSR-style sniper or L96 style.

If you want VSR-style, buy Jing Gong BAR-10 or Tokyo Marui VSR-10. You cant go wrong with the TM because, hey, ITS TM :D And all the upgrade parts are designed to work in it. Better tolerances also. Jg bar is easy to DoItYourself to 500fps. So that will be cheaper.

If you want L96, I cant help you with that because I dont own one. Mostly is good to pick a brand, which the parts are designed for. And that is usually Tokyo Marui.

Uhh, realistic mag placement? Well... :D No idea which is considered as realistic :D All the snipers?

About the upgrades : Most important is to have AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE sniper and after that comes range. First upgrade should be bucking and inner barrel. Dont buy the cheapest inner barrel what can you find. Tolerances are important here. Prometheus, PDI, Laylax, DB customs and edgi makes good ones. For the bucking, i think most of the buckings will work. Your bucking should be hard I guess when over 500fps.

For realistic mag placement on L96 style rifles he's really only got the (mostly readily available) ARES, G&G, or TM models. There could be more, I just know of those 3 (technically 4, the ARES has spring and gas with realistic mag placement) and as far as bar/vsr series with realistic mag placement, I have no idea.

Utg L96 is a nice rifle and can handle 500fps.
Bar10 with reinforced sears can hamdle 500fps and it a nice rifle
Echo1 m28 is a nice rifle and with the reinforced sears and a new piston "my buddy and I are in testing phase for ours" and its my favorite rifle out of any I have owned yet.

Its pretty much what style rifle tickles your fancy really. The Vsr/Bar has plenty of aftermarket parts to choose from.

The m28 has no aftermarket parts yet, except the trigger parts cause it uses the same as the Vsr series. The M28 piston will blow out in a few hundred shots without a doubt. Slacker and I are making M28 pistons that will not blow out. We are doing extensive testing and will be done with our tests very very soon.

The kjw m700 might be a good choice for you. The stock gun costs $200, wich is well within your budget. For the upgrades, you could get a tightbore barrel and bucking to improve your accuracy and a G&G striker spring to make your fps much higher than 500. This is a very good platform if you like the style and is also very realistic in all of it's functions. It might be just what your looking for especially because you already have some experience with the real-steel version.

Mag placement on the TM L96 is a moot point, as you still have the same length inner barrel. You just use a ramp to get the bb where it needs to be.

For your first rifle I wouldn't suggest a gas rifle. They can take much more work in the beginning than you would think. Start with a spring rifle and you will be golden.
