Yes it can be done. I did it with my bar and nothing bad happened to it. I think I cut about 1/4 of an inch off and all was well. There will be nothing wrong with you rifle if you do this. Just know that once you are done cutting you can't go back.
just make sure to sand everything down and clean up very good. You don't want all of that stuff going through your hop up.
