It's a fiberglass-type compound with a wrap, it's for better grip. We had to walk to like three hardware stores to find that stuff.

Haha yeah, I hate how square the grip is on the Type 96, so I rounded it out a little bit. Its a fiberglassed part of a tee shirt. But the whole body is coated with the fiberglass resin as well.
