I was going to post this in the gallery, but its more of a theoretical than pics at the moment. I am getting ready to paint my rifle in the next few days with the day or two I have off of work. I have all of the materials that I need and have been debating on a pattern.

Regardless of terrain/coloring I have noticed that people tend to do one of two things when they go all out painting their rifle. 1. they go with a camouflage pattern or 2. they go with a real leaf pattern.

I have read a lot on the various techniques of layering etc. but I am debating going with a combination of the two patterns while blending some of the techniques used in multicam.

For my specific area (grassland) I am thinking that I am going to go with a light base (tan), spray over that using grass and foliage as stencils with a darker color, fading into and out of the lighter base (like in the multicam base) and using an ivory and a light green (similarly to what is done in multicam but to a lesser extent) to add accents and depth. Here is a multicam pic for those of you that might be a little confused:

So what would you guys think of this concept? would it work? I may just try it to see how it turns out and I'll post some pics here or in the gallery by the end of the week (once I get done re-working my ghillie as well

as promised here are some pics of what I ended up with as well as a link to my photobucket where you can see more pics of the process I went through.

First I gutted and prepared all the parts (since I am planning to do a full tune-up/cleaning while I do this, I will re-post in the gallery once it is all back together :))

Then I applied my light base coat and re-assembled everything (without the screws and such) to the point where I could handle the whole rifle without it falling apart and without all of the firing components:

after this I used Rafia (thanks tuxedopenguin) since I dont have any grass similar to my field in my backyard, and I laid it over and applied a darker coat fading across the lighter:

after this i went over it again withe the same process but with the same light tone that I used for the first coat. this gave a nice blend of both dark straw over light straw that also faded in between dark and light patches:

I then took a stack of 3x5 cards and cut random patterns into them for templates. I wanted to avoid sharp edges, thus why I did not use contact paper, but if this doesnt turn out I will try again with the contact paper. I took the templates I cut and chose some of the smaller ones and, holding them 2-3" from the surface sprayed a white "ivory" layer, re oriented the template and sprayed a green "moss" layer. in areas where there was over spray or it did not blend well I re-applied the Rafia and the light base over the top to blend it again.
[this is the part that i was not as satisfied with, but for my areas i needed some more color]

Overall I think I am satisfied with it. there is some touch up I need to do and tune the internals again (maybe a new spring) and then see how well it actually blends to the environment. any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

EDIT: forgot to add the link to the photobucket album: http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y274/bobgengeskahn/Airsoft/ASR%20Paint/

yeah... it was just about where i wanted it in the 3rd picture there and i didnt think that the accents would be as sharp as they were, or takw so mych blending as they did to mellow them out. i might try to darken it up some this afternoon. but my game area is really light as it is; im just afraid it came out too bland
