Orange Tip

A lot of my friends have been painting their orange tip black so they look more realistic. Obviously, you should NEVER do this. My question is if it's okay to put a bit of masking tape or something over the tip so you are better concealed. You can have the best ghillie in the world but that blaze orange is going to give you away if someone sees it.

I'm not so sure about this either, but I've made a cover for my gun out of a cardboard tube with camo duck tape. When I play anywhere except at my house, I just slip it off to transport it. When I get to the field I put it back on. It might not be the best method (or legal), but it works.
I made a rifle wrap out of burlap and I put rubber bands around it to put veggies on it. But that bright orange in the middle of all that green/brown gives me away seomtimes.
You don't need orange tips here in the UK! ;)
I made a mock suppressor that slips over the full length of my barrel, you can see it in my album marked "my rifle"
Cover it with electrical tape when you need to be sneaky.

I am on good relations with the Sheriffs in my area, they come and train at my field. They told me the solid line for orange tips in NY at least.

If they pull you over and search your car and find airsoft with the orange tip removed they confiscate the gun, if they are searching your house (for any reason) and find one they confiscate it, etc...

They don't come looking for them but if they find them they take them in. no one has gotten any back, with or without lawyers. I am no lawyer but this seems to be the way they interpret the law here at least.

And some pics!

So far I haven't gotten a straight answer yet. Is it legal to put temporary tape over the orange tip So it doesnt stand out with all the green/brown woods?
I don't know but I'm going to tape mine anyway. I got spotted twice today because of it. So ...

In all honesty I would tape it anyway if it is just a backyard game or something (there are woods behind my house where we play sometimes). I searched online and the best I could find was to not alter or take it off. But putting tape on it isn't altering it, it's just putting something over it.
I was under the impression that it is just while transporting (?) Once you, a private citizen, own it, you can do whatever you want...

Same, as well as selling it.
I agree with Cheese... The only reason I painted mine is because they cold give away your position... I painted it a grassy green....
I see people saying that online allot, but no proof. I am just going by what law enforcement is doing here.

I get the impression that they leave you alone unless you are already doing something else wrong.

Agreed. I always tape mine up, but I rarely remember to take it off before going home.

I had a buddy who is going to school to be a lawyer read the law, and he said it wasn't very clear, but he said he would interpret it like this.

I would go with this seeing as how it's much easier to just go with what they are saying than to have it confiscated and have to go to court over it. Also, Master, putting tape over the tip to hide the orange is considered altering. Its a temporary alteration (tape can be removed), but you are altering the orange tip so that it is not visible. So, if you local law enforcement is confiscating guns with no orange tip, I wouldn't put tape over it. Just my two cents.
Wondering about this too because an exmarine showed up to a game and had no orange tip, also my brother has a clear plastic gun and the orange tip broke off sooo I don't know.
Just practice good judgement when you are playing airsoft.
I feel comfortable without a orange tip on my gun because we play on a private field where everyone knows who we are and what we are doing. Also, when transporting them they are in gun bags and if I were to get pulled over (and asked if they could search my car) I would inform them before hand that there are pellet guns in my trunk. Although I never would do anything that would give police a reason to search my vehicle.

Police will treat every airsoft gun as if it were a real firearm with and without a orange tip. When my friend and I first started playing airsoft in his back yard we had the cops called on us and they were trying to say that people were painting orange tips on real guns to confuse the police. Whether or not that story is true I'll never know but it's something to keep in mind.

I thought I heard that somewhere but I wasn't sure. I still would like to have the blaze orange when not in game so If for some reason a policeman should ever see it, it looks like an airsoft gun, not a reel steel gun. Alright so question answered. Thanks.
