I have had great luck with stock JG gears using a 150 sp. If shimmed correctly they should last a long time as long as you are limiting your fire rate to single shot only. If you have a 150 and are burst firing then the chance for breakdown is a lot greater and high torque gears with a different tooth ratio should be considered mandatoryIn my opinion the weakest link will be the pinion gear on the motor and should be a high quality aftermarket one, I prefer deep fire pinion gears personally.
As far as the initiall question the higher the voltage the better so a 9.6 in conjuction with a high torque motor should work fine. I personally wont drop below a 11.1 20c lipo for my DMR as that has yielded me very successful results
