As a real steel shooter and new to airsoft "sniping" I'm wondering if you guys prefer real optics over clones. (not to trash cheaper brands of course)

I've found a couple of websites where you can get some scopes normally variating between the 1000 and 5000 (€/$) now as clones for , let's just stick with a lot cheaper.

To name a couple of brands ; Bushnell, Leapers, Vortix, Premier, Falcon, Swarovski, Zeis.. and so on and so on ...

One of the rules shooting long range is , get a scope worthy of your rifle ..
(meaning your scope's price tag will be about the same as your rifle)

I understand that 200 feet or 60 meter isn't much ..
But ...

I have a Vortix Viper 3-9x40 on a .22 that i'm planning to use on my first airsoft rifle.

What brand do you have mounted on your rifle and why .. (specs)???

No one would prefer clones over real optics haha, because real steel optics will be so much better.

For Airsoft however, I think a cheap scope like a Leapers will be more than sufficient. I currently have a Nikko Stirling scope, have yet to test it in the field, but it's quite a nice one for the price.

For standard AEG's: Airsoft sights (cheapo $100 sights)
For GBBR/EBB: Midrange sights for .22 ($200+) up to RS ($600+)
Airsoft Snipers: Midrange

For me atleast I'll always prefer to get robust sights, but the clarity of the Dot/lenses is also vital for me. I've tried several different types, and so far I've disposed of all except one airsoft sight (Dytac T1-Micro). If it wasn't for the fact that I still have one "regular" AEG left I would've sold it when I get my Eotech Xps3 later this month.
Other than that I have a 1-4x Barska shortdot and a few 1-9x scopes for my snipers, all of them around $200

Truth be told, I would love to use real steel equipment in airsoft. Unfortunately, I'm not a millionaire (and if I were, I sure as heck wouldn't spend it all for airsoft). Since I don't have money to buy a Leupold or US Optics scope for my AWM or Mk12 (and certainly don't have money to replace one), I am content to use a clone optic (and actually, I'm not real choosy about what brand it is).

Truthfully though, this is airsoft, there is no reason to go out of your way (or break the bank) for real steel equipment. In the case of my real Kevlar helmets (I have 2), I was given these by 2 friends that I have, and I use these, but up until that point, I just used an old Stahlhelm motorcycle helmet that was just laying around (I covered it in a UCP Helmet cover).

I actually prefer clone optics for airsoft. You gotta admit, our airsofters are rougher with our equipment than we are with real steel equipment. Plus, shit happens, especially on the field. Lenses get shot, mounts get loose and fall off... I'd rather a $30 scope, like the Tasco I have on my M700, hit the ground or get shot than a scope that cost me a good chunk of cash.

I think it depends a great deal upon what you are doing.

Just shooting? You could probably get away with a toilet paper tube with antacid tablets glued to the top and one side for adjustment knobs, add green cellophane if you want "night vision".

If you are the sort that remember that they put the word "scout" in the front of the word "sniper" in "scout sniper" then it is time to talk about serious optics. Just because you cannot engage a target at 800 meters doesn't mean that you do not want to see what they are doing and know, for instance, that they are in fact 800 meters away.

Scouts care dearly about optics. Shooters prefer them but do not need them. I can handily put 10 out of 10 rounds in the black at 600 meters with the irons on my 50.63 real steel, hitting something at 100 yards with an airsoft rifle it is not the lack of an optic that is the limiting factor it is the capability of our simulation platform.

Pay for what you want to do.

To be honest, scopes are kind of a drawback in airsoft. Bear in mind that our shots are in the 60m to 90m range, so any magnification over 3x is just ridiculous. And so are advanced optic functions like parallax adjustment, focus, or illumination.

So I see the use of real good scopes as absurd, as they will not provide any advantage over a cheap like dirt one, and we would only be risking to damage a nice piece of equipment.

I would suggest using real scopes, but from the cheaper hunting kind. Anything capable of 3x magnification (or better yet, 2x or 2.5x) with decent optic quality and light gathering is all you need.

Most of the time I just use the Docter Sight mounted on top of my scope for aiming.
As mentioned before the average distance is around 40 to 60m, so some red dot or reflex sight is working out pretty well too.

(And I do not really want to use the toilet paper tube ... again D:)

It is a real one, but not because it is needed but just to brag around with it. Also it wasn't that expensive at all.

Have Aimpoint M2 on my M4 aeg and Redfield 3-9x40 scope on my VSR10.
They are both are great and much much better than any replica, but its overkill.
Buy real deal if you can. Dont worry if you cant.

Look on hunting forums or places like eBay for used scopes. My girlfriend's dad hunts, and he actually gave me his old (ooooooooold) Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 with parallax adjustment and Butler Creek covers. So find some chaps who have way too much in their gun safes, and they may just give you a deal on RS.

Better yet, I'm sure their wives will give you something outta that case for free
