Reasons to respect the Sniper MED

5080 Views 38 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  chiba
Just got news from one of the local fields near us that some walk on using a BASR shot through someones cheek because they didn't respect the fields MED.

According to what I've been told the guy shot another player at 20' with a 600fps gun.

The field now has a qualifier for which snipers must pass before using anything that high of a fps. All it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch. Lets respect field rules.

I've also taken a friends front tooth out at around 40m,after waiting for about 5min to take a body shot, he raised slightly higher over the banking so i took the shot but it went high and hit his top front tooth, which came clean out.
I had similar situation back in the winter. I had waited about 7min(>:D) for friend of mine(50m>:D away) to stood up a little bit more so I could take clean body shot. Sadly he didn't and when he started aiming at me I took the shot. Aimed at the upper part of the chest but bb hitted him at lips. Luckily no tooth were injured.
I'm going to probably use this thread as a example to my friends on why they should follow safety rules, and wear eye protection. Also, I don't know why people need over 450fps, I have a 400fps shotgun that shoots about 80ft and can hit a body size target at about 70ft.
Only knowledgeable players should be allowed a higher FPS.

This thread calls for a topic about the positives and negatives of high FPS...
This is exactly why I run all of my rifles at 350-400 fps. I have hit plenty of people in the face (sometimes on purpose, sometimes not) from all ranges, and the only time someone started bleeding from one of my shots was when I was firing, he was crawling across me, not knowing I was there, and stuck his hand right over the muzzle (weird root...) right after I pulled the trigger.

Sneaky bastard, served him right. Neither of us had any idea the other was there.
I know one fella who got shot in the knuckle from about 150ft away, but this rifle he was shot with supposedly shot around 800fps. His knuckle is still sore to bend at times and this is a year later.
I have a friend who was admin a game at a local field. While he was waving his hand someone shot his hand with a very hot AEG and fractured his pinky. It got sore and he could no bend it. Later that day he checked in to a hospital to get X-rays and a splint. The kid of that field was banned with his AEG after they cronoed his AEG.

You know. Full face protection, even mesh is good. I see people playing without full face pro and shake my head. Everyone on every forum i've been on has said that if the head is all they can see, thats what they will take. I've hit plenty of people in the head, and have a scare every so often for fear that someone has lost their teeth on my account.

Yeah yeah my opinion. But no full face pro is retarded in my eyes and nothing will ever change that.
I can't stand a mask, but I ALWAYS wear my retainers and several layers of cloth to cover my face. It has been made clear that if it's the only shot, most anyone will take it.
At my local site, you must show that you're mature/experienced enough to be allowed to use a 500fps rifle, it's a great idea. I think at most sites though there will always be someone who will stupidly get a shot in under the MED.
The limits here for bolt action guns is 550fps and minimum engagement 30m..
550 fps is a lot and you should keep in mind you're PLAYING with people and you're not in a computer game.

I've seen broken tooth and bb's that went under the skin and when I play I keep those things in my head, I really don't want to cause them to anyone.

I've been shot accidentally in the palm by a 420fps AEG without gloves from 1m away the skin got separated!

i have to say i have more of an issue with hot aegs. At my site and most otheres in the uk the max is 350fps for full auto.

when the acm guns hit the market we saw alot more issues due to the power. our site doesnt/didnt crono all gun. as most skirmishers were regulars and when tested were trusted to leave it at the same fps.
guns would only be check if there were issues. these became 10 fold with the acm due to there fps.
Our site is quite dense woodland hense the need for lower fps as engagments happen at prity short range.
Me and a team mate were attacking a man made bunker system. we managed to get to the outside berm(a 5/6ft inbankment) not soon after someone poped over the top from about 2ft away fire full auto at us.
after returning to tge respon in pain i lifted my top and had blood holes all over my back and neck.this was even through a set of thermals and dpm jacket ,same with my mate.
gun was then checked and was running 437fps. the guy had bought it afew days before and hadnt checked it.

And this is why Dragon Valley have their over anal chrono testing regeime and their 350fps for everything rules! 1fps over and you cant use it.... end of.... no discussion..... go cut your spring!!

It stops the AEG weilding f**kwits from doing more damage than their legaly allowed, but it does limit us BA elitests abit :yup:......
I like how informative this topic has gotten, and will continue to grow. I think the Admins should make this a sticky as a reminder to Sniper MED for this sport. Just saying.

Anyone else agree with me?

Maybe make a single sticky post with all of this info on it. No one wants to read all of this stuff if they just joined. How about we make the post have a few of the worst scenarios from this thread, and all of the safety procedures people must take to avoid them?
Or a new thread? Locked after posting so no one can comment.

A thread that just reminds people of the dangers, with quotes from people showing what happens when shooting under the MED?

What if I want to shoot someone 150' away?
I think the more people read the stories the more they will respect the MED.

... I don't know why people need over 450fps...
In a higher-power setup:

  1. The impact is greater so people can actually call their hits.
  2. The BB travels to its intended target faster so there's less time between shot and impact. BB weight actually affects this a lot.
  3. There is an increase in effective range, but still not quite as much as an effective hop up system.

#1 IMHO is the only problem I have with lower-power setups. Higher-power setups also have many negatives, but safety is the key issue.

I would get a higher powered airsoft gun, but my friends are wimps and usually call themselves out even if i miss.
The BB travel speed is actually quite a factor when you're in a field less than 100m long. I still have an argument between using 0.3 and 0.25g BBs with my teammates.

Anyways, it is important to wear good protection. I wear a steel mesh lower face mask and recently bought the new gen. masks (the ones with better fit, straps, etc.). The mask has better fitment over the older generations, and I'm sure you can get a very good cheek weld with it now.
