I made one of cardboard (3 layers, pretty strong) and about 5 layers of duct tape. I also made a little combat vest to use with it, using the same methods (CB and Duct Tape). It even comes with a holster! Unfortunately, it doesn't stand up to well against a baseball bat...

This is both, fun to just run around in.

This is just the shield, you can see the bat damage a bit here. You can't see it in this pic, but there is a sheet of plexiglas running down the inside, keeps it bulletproof.

And now the vest. Pretty simple, only took about 90 mins to make. Has a pretty well universal holster in it, and a pocket for dead rags or whatever you feel like putting in there.
I used these once just as a distraction/lure, and it worked pretty well. Since my gun lacks in range, I need to get close, and this worked to divert their attention for those few vital seconds to get off a couple shots.
