This might be a a rather obvious question to many people, but I'm new to HPA. First of, can HPA engines operate on Co2? I'm attempting to come up with a plan to construct a hoseless HPA system that conceals inside the stock of an SR25. Since a tank obviously won't fit, the obvious choice (to me) seemed to be small co2 cartridges.

What I would like to do is mount an HPA engine (preferably a Polarstar Kythera Semi) with it's hose exiting into the stock instead of the grip and somehow connecting to a concealed co2 cartridge. The grip would house the Kythera's charging handle, modified to be concealed within the grip.

So would it actually be possible or is an air tank a must?

If you used a UGS and one of my mini HPA tanks you would be able to slide about any stock on or off the tank, maybe even the one you want to use. They do work better with stocks meant to run on a buffer tube, but you could run one of the SR25 looking Magpul ones instead to achieve that look. Same goes for the CGS, but I'd steer you towards my tank as you would eclipse the cost of it in CO2 spending in not much time, especially with 33g cartridges.

They already exist. I've personally got this: WRAITH X for MTW – Wolverine Airsoft

You can use co2 cartridges and HPA with it. You don't have to choose one way or the other and lock yourself into the choice.

I've had no issues whatsoever with it, or with Gen 2 Inferno. (FWIW if you google and see some negative comments, people used to complain about the soft locked rate of fire on semi auto on Inferno engine. But there was a patch to the firmware years ago fixing the issue. You can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger.)
