In real combat, smoke grenades are a valuable asset for a variety of reasons. I've been scouring the internet recently for information regarding civilian use of smoke grenades that don't need to be lit like a fire cracker.

Traditional military smoke grenades can be had legally, but they are expensive and dangerous. When we trained with them, use usually "faked the funk" and deposited them in ammo cans because they get HOT. (Camp Pendleton is ALWAYS on fire, as you've seen on the news I'm sure, SoCal is usually on the cusp of spontaneous combustion.)

I have found a few "flameless" smoke grenades, the most cost efficient were about $6.00 a pop...the least cost efficient were about $50.

After reading a thread on a paintball forum http://forum.specialopspaintball.com/index.php?showtopic=115349&mode=threaded I started looking into creating my own. I've worked with explosives in the past and am fully capable of creating my own bombs, grenades, and mines, but the vital parts were provided by the government...which they won't give me anymore...I asked.

Instructables.com has many tutorials on making all kinds of stuff. Like detonator switches, which can look really cool, or really stupid. These could be used to ignite those model rocket engine igniters (not the engine, but the engine starter), which in turn would cause the chemical smoke compound to burn. The compound I haven't yet found, but I think it would be easiest to buy a ton of smoke firework deals from China or wherever (as the forum thread linked above mentioned) and swap it with the burn fuse. But this method would only be good for mines, since everything is connected by a wire...

The best option is probably to buy the $6 grenades but making is so much more satisfying...and replenishable.

In order to add a viable piece of equipment, and a new tactic, to our sniper bag of tricks, we need to find a cheap, SAFE (funny how cheap was first...), and efficient way to create a smoke screen.

Any thoughts? Links? Ideas? Possibilities? Stories?

I have been thinking about using those smoke grenades that you can get from any fireworks stand... Making a small tube like thing that is cut in two, and then with a fuse or something sandwiched between... Then lining the inside with sandpaper or something..... or something.

Then attach a pull string to it so that when you pull the pin the smoke will start

That or what i have though of for a "decoy" was to use those model rocket ignitors to ignite it... thus making a smoke screen where you aren't.

well i have instructions on how to make a smoke bomb from artifical food coloring (organic food coloring works best) you use salt peter (potassium nitrate) and i believe sugar, it was really easy to make and cost less than 5$ to get started, it didnt need a firecracker to light just a wick (or you can make a pull igniter with several matchs) you can look it up on youtube sadly ive forgotten the URL =(

for those all you need is sugar and salt peter... they should be used in equal ammounts.. but they wont put off the smoke that you would get out of a comercial grenade.

It is a good expriment....but... if you cook it wrong it will go off in the pan you are cooking it in.. so not a good idea to try honestly

I believe the mix was not 1:1 but something more like 3:1 (sugar:salt peter?) for the most smoke...the salt peter burns but doesn't smoke. It burns the sugar (which naturally doesn't) and that's why it smokes.

But these are still not flameless. They need to be lit, and I'm looking to not start something on fire. Unless it can be contained somehow, but I don't see how.

Seen it, but that still requires burning and flame...imagine a paintball co2 can threaded onto a huge bottle of baby powder and it shoots all the dust into the air...environmentally safe. It's been super dry across the country and it would be bad for airsoft if a homemade smoke bomb burned down the Rockies!

lol yeah no kidding ... that is a good idea there with the CO2.... use a ball valve so you can set how fast the CO2 will leak out... Either that or just use one of the little 12 gram CO2 packs.

That is a really good idea ph
