So the next op on my list is our annual All Out War event (AOW4) november 2-3. Just for reference, this game starts at midnight friday and runs all the way to late afternoon/evening saturday with one break for breakfast usually.

The night time part of the game is PITCH BLACK, even with the moon out. So I was thinking of picking up these toy goggles and maybe an IR flashlight to see if that would help me gain an edge.

Is this a stupid idea? :ashamed:Anyone here familiar with these?

I have been looking at making my own pair of those, the one thing i would say you should do is swap out the IR Led's it has with some up in the 960nm range to remove that glow. and a good IR flashlight (or even your own bank of additional LED's) should definatly make it see farther

lol, it has potential, the thing is I bet that purple light is visible from farther away then those LED's let you see, so unless you tweak it all you do is paint a "shoot me" sign on yourself :) also, how would you mount/use it?

1) Was thinking of making or buying a cheap IR Flashlight and mounting it on my weapon's tac rail so as not to use the unit's built in illuminator...

2) Gotta figure out how to make a strap/mount for my head- I have not seen the unit IRL yet, so if it's heavy/bulky, I don't know...

1) that would probably work, only issue i might see if you need to look one way, and point the rifle in another, still just swapping out those LED's with something farther in the IR spectrum should solve that.

2) looking at how it is shaped it does not look like it would be difficult to mod/tinker a mount out of a replica nvg mount for helmet, if you use one. also if you do mount this an IR laser might be a godsend to assist in aiming if you do not have time to practice using the sights with it mounted/it is too bulky to use the sights.

I actually meant to say glasses, not goggles, but my mind got the better of me. As for mounting I think a helmet mounted setup would be best, seems easiest, and I imagine you can have it stand off from your face a bit to allow room for eye-pro.

Will anyone else have NV that picks up IR. If so using a IR torch are basically just shining a torch as normal to them. But I guess most people won't have anything?

I'm sure gen2 or 3 are well out of reach (as they would be for me!). At least 90%+ of people won't be able to see you.

Having just watched the video ~$50. Even if it only works out to 50 feet that's 50 feet better than nothing. Should work with the IR torch too so I say why not?

Only thing is will it shut off if a torch is shined on it or will it burn out? I assume it will just white out and adjust slowly and that's not such a big deal. Might be worth trying to find out - probably just an issue with really old NV though.

I've used something like this to good effect. Kid's toy but it works. An appropriate flashlight, as discussed above, would greatly extend its useful range.

I cut circles out of lexan and secured them over the projector and lenses. They protect the lenses from BB strikes.

I then duct taped over the Lexan circle covering the projector. The emitted wavelength completely bypasses the tape. As a result, there are no light sources visible to the naked eye (i.e., players not using some form of nightvision) and I can use it without unimpeded.

Just my .20 g,

Josephus

EDIT: I forgot to add I play wearing a full face paintball mask. I've had no problems.

A sidenote: These things do impair your depth perception.
