You should not worry about it being a specific problem: it is a design flaw. My Tanaka with the short default magazine was the first Airsoft gun I owned and I thought that was how gas magazine would refill.. But it is not: most magazines have no spill - and I mean absolutely NO SPILL - when filling them. The Tanaka long magazine does not have that problem and you can fill it properly.
Regardless of that spill effect, the short mag does get gas in it for shooting..but the main problem with that mag is the short redundancy of gas it holds.. Which makes it probably the most incoherent mag I have ever tried.. The cool down effect is noticeable and it gets too much influence from outside temperatures.
I would advise using it as a last resort and switching to a long magazine which is the way to go if you go for an external rig as well.
Even on green gas the long mag is way more consistent and solves around 60% of the consistency problems in the stock version of the gun. The other 30% is the hop and the rest is misc elements and parts.
