My team and I are looking for a team DMR. We are pooling resources to get one but we would prefer a budget rifle to begin with until we decide if we would want to continue to use one.

Currently we use CQC based weapons. But it would seem to us that we would be wise to have a DMR on hand if for no other reason than to be able to loan out a spare weapon when a new person joins us to try out the sport.

So some of the ones I was looking at as beginner DMR rifles are below, I think we'd like to keep the budget at under $200 to start with. We can expand later on and invest in a more expensive rifle after we are sure we will continue to use and need one.

Obviously we'd welcome input on anything else that might be just as effective or more reliable. But as I mentioned earlier we are looking for a budget rifle. If we can keep it around the $150-$200 range for the initial investment it would be better. I am already familiar with some of the mods that Vindicareassassin has posted, and I have already started using some of them on our CQC weapons to improve accuracy and reliability.

Can I ask why not? Does it not have the right hopup type? Inherent structural weakness (although at the cheap end, what doesn't)? Hard to find mag style (although AK's are about as common as m4/m16 mags)? Bad battery location and style?

While I do respect your opinion, I like to have a reason to avoid a product.

I see that m14 and sr25 are fairly common dmr's here on the forums, but if something else will work almost as well for a fraction of the initial investment, that would be fine.

Hey,
The problem with the JG SVD's is that they fall apart really easily. Also, just for your knowledge, the SVD doesn't use AK mags (not sure about the JG though).

Sounds good so far. Just to ask though, why are those your recommendations? Do they have a good barrel:cylinder ratio? All around better build quality?

What brand mag would the A&K use? TM, G&P, CA
Are G&G guns compatible with TM mags? Or do they need to be G&G/CA ?

Anything I should know about these two rifles? are there any natural weak points in the parts I should keep an eye on?

OK.. I'll chime in here too...

People are coming down on the JG SVD for no reason at all..
Out of the box its just your average Chinese Clone..

If you take the time to strip it down and do all the DMR mods suggested by Vindi it will be a reliable Beginner weapon. I have been playing with one of these for several with no problems other than usual wear and tear.

as for Cons its not really an SVD in aesthetics... its an AK with a long barrel.
It uses standard AK mags, not dragunov mags.. but on the good side it is compatible with most makers. I use TM, CA, King Arms, & Mag brand Mags with the weapon.

People will come down on it a lot but its probably because they expected more than the particular gun could deliver straight out of the box.

It will require a lot of tinkering and Up-Grades to make it top notch.. but as a spare and loner beginner gun it will perform fine. I think you will find a lot of people wont like playing with the weapon due to its very long length especially if you are all accustomed to playing with CQC style weapons.

You will need spare batteries as it used Stick style loaded up top unless you an external battery pouch.

Finally you will need to find an aftermarket mount for optics should you want to use a scope with it... these can be hard to find.

Hope that helps clear thing up a bit...

As for my recommendation for you guys... I would suggest you look at what your team carries and just get a longer barreled version of the most popular.

ie... if your team mostly carries g36c get a g36k
ie... if your team mostly carries M4's get an M16 or SR25

get the idea? .... The reason being then you and/or teammates can easily loan out 1 or 2 mags and not effect your load out while giving the noob a chance to actually get in the game with close to a full load out.

The a&k can use any SR-25 mags i believe. The G&G can only use G&G and Classic Army mags, but they are very good mags. I recommend those two rifles because they have better build quality and our excellent weapons. They are extremely accurate and great platforms to build off of. The M14 is probably the best model because the way that all of the components interact with each other, it makes it extremely accurate and reliable. The G&G more so because it can use Version 2 internals which makes it a lot easier to get parts for and work on.

As for recommending a weapon that you can use as a DMR and as a loner I'd choose a SOCOM length G&G M14.

They are almost as accurate as a full length for your DMR roll, they are FNG proof, and they are awesome in F.I.S.H. type scenarios, after all its what I built mine for originally
