Everyone has a "wall" here, it can be accessed by clicking your name on the forum, and it's located in your public profile, and other people can send visitor messages there, which are like pm's, but everyone else can see them, you also get notification of them. But I heavily encourage you to answer by sending a message to his, not your wall, that way you can see when someone has answered your public question etc. You can see the conversation between you two by clicking "view conversation" next to the message.
