So he took apart the gearbox, reassembled it, and it's still having this issue? Initially my first thought would be the piston is locked back, generally because of a faulty shim job, and less likely because of a dying battery. However, if he took it apart, that's likely not the problem.

If it's making a clicking noise, the motor is getting power, which means the wiring harness is good, which leads you to an issue with the motor, likely it is either not getting enough power, is over-tightened into the gearbox, or the motor itself is failing. Something to check would be a the motor brushes, but aside from that I don't know very much about motors.
