Are we talking spring or gas L96s?
Spring:
Maruzen
Tokyo Marui
Gas:
Tanaka M700 AICS

that's 3

For spring clones, you can get the UTG L96 (Shadow Ops) or the Well L96 but Well makes L96 clones of BOTH the maruzen L96 AND tokyo marui L96

Btw just to be clear
tokyo marui has the magazine in the right place (so will clones)
maruzen has magazine in wrong place (so will clones)

Get a WELL and upgrade the crap out of it. Then you will have a great gun. Make sure it is the Maruzen copy. So the mag will be a little further forward than normal. Also, don't get the one with the folding stock. They look cool but they just add extra weight and they don't really have a purpose. They also create a weak point in the stock. Cheers

I agree with you 1tonne. I was just saying out of the box those 3 are the best!

I have a Maruzen clone L96. After convincing my friend to buy a Bar-10, I'm slightly jealous that his gun weighs less than half of mine.

Other than that, my baby's treated me ... WELL >:D

On a more serious note:
I've tumbled down a hill and landed harder than I would've liked on my stock, but it's still fine. Bolt handle doesn't loosen with use either, and the spring-loaded mags make mag removal a breeze. The bipod mount rotates slightly, making a fixed bipod slightly more usable on less than flat + level surfaces. All in all, I'm happy with my WELL.

If you have the cash, you could spring for a TM or Maruzen, but it doesn't really matter who manufactured it if you plan on fully upgrading it. At that point, it was just a really expensive stock with a pair of embedded screws.

Its true.

I have TM L96.
First of all i buy this gun, then spend cost of rifle for internal upgrades and same amount of $ for external upgrades. Now i can build base TM L96 without stock.

Both valid points. A BAR is a lot lighter than a type 96. But the AI arctic warfare frame just screams durability. I have dropped my type 96, people have stood on it (good camouflage eh) and it has endured the most ridiculous amounts of torture. And it doesn't care one bit, those things are sturdy as hell.

My BAR isn't too bad either, but it's not as solid as my type 96. It's just twice as light. My type 96 weighs in at over 12 lbs, whereas the bar is more like 5 lbs ;)

The whole type 96 vs VSR thing aside, if you want a reliable type 96, get the well MB01. Don't bother with the TM system, it's cool, but far from practical :hehe:

TM L96 and clones just take more time and money for good tuning ;)

It's impractical though.

Don't get me wrong, it's cool, and it can definitely work, it just takes more effort. The loading mechanism is a bit of a PITA, it can jam bb's more easily and it is a lot harder to take apart than a "normal" rifle. If you want to get the bolt out on a type 96 you take off the stock, remove the spring guide stopper and you're done. With a L96 AWS you have to take off the stock, remove the entire loading mechanism, take the barrel off, remove the loading fin, remove the spring guide stopper and after all that you can access the cylinder. Not really practical :hehe:

Again, it can work, but a type 96 is cheaper, more reliable and easier to work on, so from a practical point of view, it's definitely the winner.

From a cool-factor point of view, the L96 AWS is obviously better though

If you're gonna get a TM style type 96 you should just get a TM though, clones have cheaper parts so you better be good with fixing/finding obscure parts!

The WELL/Maruzen L96 beats the TM L96 hands down. I would not buy one as they are a pain to upgrade and have less potential because the cylinder is smaller. Also the Ramp system sucks.
Do not get one.

If you've got the money, it's hard to beat a PDI upgraded Ares L96. It's got the most beautiful body of any L96, with an incredibly sexy foldable stock and fluted barrel, including the iconic AI flash hider. It even has a 'cocked/loaded' indicator.

The only bad thing about that setup is the weird mag system. The hop-up is a nice TDC style, but I don't know how customisable the nub is.

Sounds like a Maruzen copy but with a good quality finish.
But even a WELL would be good enough for most people as the outside will still look good for a number of years.

If you're serious about it you ought to paint it anyway :hehe:

The WELL clone of the L96 AWS works fine. Both guns still need to be upgraded anyway.

Honestly I dont get why people keep saying TM is best. It's just an expensive stock, you need to upgrade the internals anyway. And a stock is not worth 200 USD just because it has a TM stamp on it

WELL uses pot metal. You will find the thinner areas start crumbling like cookies after sometime.
I know that the more expensive brand may have better metal but what do you mean about crumbling? My WELL L96 is built like a brick. The only annoying part is the paint comes off a little but my one is a number of years old now and still looks OK.
The Pot metal in the WELL L96 has well lasted too.

Ares by far makes the most realistic AICS, skins and chassis.

Well my WELL must be special then, because it is absolutely rock solid after countless abuse
