Currently, I have an l96 aws 45 degree trigger and I see all kinds of "out of stock" and super expensive "zero" triggers. Can one just purchase a new piston catch for their trigger? Essentially converting the 45 to a zero without a massive bill?

Basically, no. It is an entirely different system. The 45 degree triggers use a flawed mechanism that diverts half the force upwards which causes the piston to scratch the cylinder and makes for a bad trigger pull and bolt cycle. It also wears quickly and is prone to slam fire.

A 90 degree trigger is an entirely different mechanism. You also need a 90 degree piston. They don't wear nearly as quickly (it'll outlast your gun probably), has a nice crisp trigger pull and the bolt cycle is smooth. It does require you to replace the entire trigger unit though.

Doesn't have to be super-expensive. An ASP trigger set goes for about 80 euros and that includes a 90 degree piston and a spring guide as well. Springer's S-trigger is also a pretty good deal at $80 USD if I remember correctly.

Unfortunatelly not. I have just bought one to use with your VSR-R. 110 Euros.
