So I have been playing airsoft for about a year now and have only ever had one gun, M40A3 sniper. Finally getting a sidearm (it sucks to not have one FYI) and in my looking around the web for the right one have come across several sniper upgrade kits. Thinking about my gun and maybe a slight underperformance on the field, I have found myself wanting greater range, FPS, and accuracy.
Right now the gun is shooting about 420-430 FPS with .20g BBs, and I can accurately hit a target at around 70yds, maybe a bit more with really good weather. As far as accuracy goes I somewhat want to upgrade my hop up system so I can effectively use .36-.40g BBs (right now I use .32). The guns current system can probably handle it but I'd prefer to have more than enough clearance to use the heavier gram.
Does anybody have any suggestions for upgrades? Most of the internals are made by Maple Leaf and for the most part, everything is VSR compatible.

I researched this some time ago and it looks promising.
The price difference between a TM VSR and a VFC M40 (with parts support from ASG as well) is so small, it makes the VFC a way better choice for an M40 rifle imo. The externals are amazing. £210-220 vs £270 for the VFC M40.

For internals:
Barrel: VSR
Hopup unit: stock
Bucking: VSR
Cylinder head: Stock or VFC upgrade head (iirc)
Cylinder: VSR or VFC upgrade
Triggerset: VSR or VFC upgrade

Supposedly the stock hopup unit works fine. Seen some guy shoot 700fps 0.20 with his.

The VFC manual has VFC upgrade parts listed at the end here:

Deffo high on my list of to do projects.

Hi. It is my first post here.

I have upgraded mine with:
- full edgi kit /including barrel ported unbridged 6.01, cylinder, piston, spring and spring guide/
- Vfc trigger set
- maple leaf 70 Autobot bucking.
Hopup chamber is stock. Used dental floss mod there.

There is no problem with upgrading the rifle till you try to use heavier bbs. Then starting from 0.4 and heavier the original bb feeding system sucks. First thing you need to do is to put a very tiny film of silicon oil on the edge of the loading fin and loading ramp. This can help. If you still have issues you need to shave the front part sharp edge of loading fin and make it more rounded. And in the end you can also find a remedy by putting a washer in the loading ramp /the screw perpendicular to the ramp axis/ to make it wider. I have all 3 mods and it works now like a dream. 650 FPS on 0,2 and 495 fps on 0,45.
I have a VSR upgraded to the same level and I can honestly say M40A3 is the winner in case of sturdiness and external parts quality.

Konsta - sure. Excuse me for my negligence.

Just one more thing concerning M40A3 from VFC - The best bbs for this rifle are 0,43g as the barrel is 470 mm so 0,45 have some joule creep. Or you can put there shorter barrel.

I had the opportunity to work on a VFC M40A3 today.

It had the following internals in it:
ASG M170 cylinder and triggerset kit

The triggerset seems a bit flimsy, and the screws are small, but it all seemed very simple and well fitting.

The piston liks like a PDI, with an ID of 13,5mm! Piston weight is 36gr. It has a vented padding like airsoftpro.
Spring was 10mm-11MM OD (i will correct) and spring guide was 7,5mm.
Cylinderhead is completely flat bare metal; a sorbo pad is heavily recommended.

So i installed an airsoftpro 9mm spring guide and 2017 model airsoftpro M140 spring.
These parts fit perfectly.

The hopup unit is very nice. It has a concave hard rubber spacer like maple leaf, but longer. The stock hopup bucking looks like a maple leaf delta bucking inside.
So for a stock gun it is very good, and it is almost not worth putting in a maple leaf bucking. I would say that only rhop is better than stock.

The rifle shot 155m/s with the airsoftpro M140 spring, which is OK, but only 95m/s with a .43.
So it actually lost a lot of energy, where as it's usually the other way around.
Same result with both stock bucking and maple leaf bucking.

Seeing as it's fairly normal VSR10 design inside, does anyone know why it shoots so low with a heavy BB? Even with stock barrel this is not right.

How long is your inner barrel? The M140 isn't the most powerful spring and the .43g bb's are most likely too heavy for that spring. How is your air seal on your gun? Do you know if you would be losing any pressure on the way?

You would probably need an almost 100% air seal to shoot .43g with an M140. Try backing down the bb weight. Start with a .36 and move up from there.

I would highly recommend Reliku's barrel:cylinder ratio guide (http://www.airsoftsniperforum.com/32-general-sniper-talk/14303-cylinder-barrel-ratios-explained.html)

For comparison, my other VSR shoots 157m/s with 0.20 and 118 with 0.43, on the same spring.
And that's on a 555mm barrel...which is the opposite of these ratio idea's claims ;)

The most likely cause is blowby at the nozzle with the higher pressure of the .43.
I can't recall the last time i had a bolt action rifle that did less energy with a heavier BB though, so it's a bit surprising.

The rifle is out of my hands now, so i can't really follow up on it.

Too light piston?

I have a shallower retention groove on my ubnbridged Prommy barrel and it works perfectly with ML buckings. Then I also have unbridged EDGI barrel also the same. It works with ML and stock M40A3 (VFC) concave nub. Both bridges were filled by hand. And when I compare them with stock barrel of M40A3 the window in it is wider and deeper.
