My l96 wont catch when i work the bolt unless i tap the trigger box. It really has a mind of its own and works when it wants too. Should i just replace the sear? It's not chewed up or anything on the outside.

I'd dissassemble the cylinder, and check the piston (where the sear catches), look for marks. Without the spring, make sure it still seats perfectly on the spring guide. Check the roundness of the cylinder (use a caliper or roll it on a known flat surface), make sure you check at various points. look inside the bolt/cylinder receiver and ensure that you have your cylinder guide still. Ensure that the cylinder is nicely tightened to the bolt and that the mating surfaces are clean. Ensure that the spring guide seat (the movable part on the trigger, behind the sear) is present and that the spring guide sits nicely on it. Also see if you have any deep wear marks on either side of the spring guide seat (this could indicate that the cylinder is slightly miss-aligning, and thus the piston sear wouldn't snap back vertical).

Finally, being that tapping the trigger box seems to help....take a close look at your trigger. Make sure that it seats perfectly to the receiver. Look closely at the piston sear and make sure that there is a tiny spring on both sides. Test that those springs (if present) are still seated correctly (as they can un-seat with wear).....hold the trigger assembly level, pull the trigger and keep it held back, using your finger push the piston sear so it is tilted all the way back, then let go of it. It should snap back to vertical or past. Repeat the test, but with pushing the piston sear to tilt towards the front. One of those tiny springs will snap it back from the front, and the other from the rear. If they work, repeat the test without holding the trigger (to get it forward, put some forward pressure on the piston sear, and pull the trigger). All movement should be free of any contact and have no tightness at all.

That should get you started anyway.

Good Luck!
