What's more important to you, your gun or your tactics?

I just recently joined this forum, but honestly, I've read some stuff I don't agree with at all. First of all, a $700-1500 upgraded gun is not necessary at all. I run a STOCK a&k dragunov with iron sights. Yes, the whole iron sight thing was because Simo Hayha is an inspiration of mine, and because I learned to shoot that way and am generally better off with iron sights. I have no secondary. On the other hand, I have invested upwards of $400 on my loadout. My ghillie is my baby. I made it with fabric, thread, jute, dye, a long sleeve t-shirt, jeans, and a sewing machine. Despite its humble beginning, i've thrown somewhere around 200 dollars into that thing. I work on it before every op, and it changes color every 50 feet i move while wearing it. Other than that, of course, I have my comms, boots, BDU's, mask, goggles, and gloves. Because of my ability to scout and engage without being seen, I am regarded as one of the most feared players at my field. It really bugs me when people ask me about my gun and I tell them, then they treat me like some sort of noob because rather than chucking money at it I trained for hours and hours every day until it became an extension of me. I am encouraging you, fellow snipers, to try my route, using whatever gun you have at this moment. Train with it. Learn how to maintain a ghillie. Learn how to disappear. You will go very far, just trust me, you can do it!

I am encouraging you to agree/disagree with me, or just tell me your approach to airsoft sniping. Fire away!

I think tactics are way more important. My DMR went down one game so all i had was my pistol, my radio, and my scope. Never fired a shot, just sneaked around and called out enemy positions to my team. We won :).
I would say tactics. Doesn't matter what kind of gun or what you have in it. If your tactics arw poor then you can't use the weapon to its full capability.

I dont get to play that much, but I am learning ever game I get to. It's always about tactics. Being out before you get a shot off really sucks.
As for me, I ran a stock UTG l96 for my first solid year of airsoft sniping. Loved the rifle, didn't do a thing to it, and was pin point up to around 125-150 feet. I wasn't picking people off with the long shot, and more than anything, taught me to get close enough to target without being seen, otherwise sheer firepower would over run me.
.
Snipers gospel, this is so true its scary. And ironically this is how I learned what stealth was. I used a crappy 80 dollar gun for about 3 months with only teflon tape, and a shimmed hop. The maximum effective range was about 115 ft. And I was brutally gunned down until I learned what stealth was. As fuzzy stated tactic is king(under me of course) but an upgraded rifle is an asset, not the enemy. You say you pown with your stock rifle(op)? Can you imagine if you had another 100 ft of pin point precision to play with?

exactly!! Stealth is the single most important part, then a good rifle comes next.
It is a poor player that blames his equipment for not getting the job done. This is true in any sport!

I played against a guy that used a cheap springer pistol in a 6 on 6 game and he ended up taking out our entire team! This was after we had taken out 4 of his 5 team mates. We all had mid to high level AEG's!

He knew the space and how to use it to his advantage! Equipment itself will only take you so far! Tactics are always first, once they are mastered then better equipment will make a dramatic difference.
My rifle wasn't functioning properly at the beginning of a game day I went to recently so I ended up using a friends MP5 with an effective range of... 50 foot if I lobbed my shots. Try as I may I could not get that gun to shoot any further.

I still managed to get a few kills against the enemy though, just by being as sneaky as I could!
An Airsoft Sniper to me is one who takes advantage every place they can.

Tactics

Field Craft

Gear

Gun

These are all places where the Airsoft Sniper should be focusing. Master one or two areas and you will be a good Airsoft Sniper, one who is feared at the field, first picked for teams, and makes a difference in every game they play.

Master all areas and you are a FORCE.

Don't limit yourself with the mindset that you don't need a great gun, or great gear. Money does not equal great in this case either. Describing a gun based on how much it costs is ludicrous, describing it based on what it can do though is accurate and appropriate.

I care as little for the guys that brag about how much their gear costs as I do for guys that try to belittle the players with expensive loadouts. Both are focusing on the cost, albeit for different reasons.

Everything we take into the field, from gear, guns, ammo, mindset, ability level, training, etc can be improved upon and should be improved upon. It is a package deal, don't limit yourself.

I personally think both are important. But if your tactics are bad you will be hit, if your gun is bad you wont get hits. That's the way I like to look at it.

I disagree with relying on your gun to survive, many newbs do this and it ticks me off to see hundreds of 8 year olds running around like an storm trooper calling themselves a sniper. I think tactics should be your primary weapon, not your secondary.

I have seen a lot of that apart from their actually like 12 years old but I know what you mean .
Tactics. An upgraded rifle just makes my job easier.

A CO would much rather have a well trained sniper with a stock rifle to take long shots and provide recon than a poorly trained sniper with a super upgraded rifle.

Very true.

Nicely put! I totally agree! I think I could run with a rubber knife and still get a good amount of kills, but take a guy who has never held a rifle and hand him something shooting 650fps with 500ft range and 100% accuracy and he may not get even one kill. Its not the weapon that wins the battle, its the soldier!
I went to a game recently and there was this guy who forgot to bring his primary weapon, some L96 clone. He normally plays the role of sniper but recently he has been playing DMR because he runs it at 350fps. Back to forgetting his primary, he never uses a secondary, only a knife. I thought he was the biggest idiot in the workd and he ended up getting about half as many kills with that knife as I did with my bar10. For a ghillie with a knife, that is superbly good, I would never have been able to do that. I don't have any numbers for you, but it was a death match with around 50 or 60 people.

Oh don't get me started on the rambo wannabees.

Ghillie with knife combo... That sounds sweet, I think I might try it out :D I think being stealthy is a bit more important than having a good gun, but it's obviously very hard to pull off those knife kills that you mentioned, so having a good gun is also extremely important. It would be near impossible to get that close to someone on some of the more open fields, so having a gun that can get the job done is one of the key aspects of airsoft.
The other day we did a small scrimmage. Me and my bud were out numbered but knowing the lay of the land and being sneaky we ambushed the enemy team and won. I can say that my rifle isn't completely upgraded and doesn't have 300 ft range but it gets the job done. I can care less when someone insults me about not having a 1000 dollar gun either, because I am the one getting the kills right?

Exactly! I rock lower priced rifles as well. My Bar10's go about 150ft and thats not really considered far but I dont seem to have issues getting kills,lol.. I pick my shots, get my shots and get some more.. One of these days when I get around to installing my R hops I guess we'll see how much better things are. But I'm not in any big hurry to be honest. My M28 is actually by far the longest shooting rifle I have but I'm waiting on my piston. That sucker shot an EASY 225ft accurately and got some shots going out 250ft +!! Of course out that far was a 50-50 chance on getting the kill but with a bolt rifle, its harder to trace the shot back to me,lol.. and the 2nd shot was more likely to land where I want.
i would say accuracy is more important then range in terms of upgrading a rifle.
Lol.. yeah I'd say so.. pretty much goes without saying,hahaha.. If ya cant hit someone it pretty much become pointless.
