Hi All,
My son wants a sniper rifle for b-day/Christmas. He's going to be 13 and isn't too picky about which one but has sent me images of the Well MB08. In short he'd like something in that "style." Since I want it to be a good gun, do what it's supposed to do well, and last I started looking around and came up with a few options. Was wondering if you guys had an opinion on any of these.

Well MB08
MetalTac MB06 SR-2
Bolt Action BT L-96
Bravo Full Metal MK98

I'm looking to stay under $200 (as you can see by my choices), will need a scope, and he won't be modding it, at least for a while.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

Just saying, an MB08 is very heavy, considering your son is 13 years old.

An MB06 is pretty light, I'd say that's the best option if you absolutely MUST have something type 96 based :yup:

Go for the WELL MB06 then though, it's only $60 or so.

hmmm, he must be aiming for the L96 looks, not the platform.

The MB08 is a solid choice, but as Reliku said, it's way too heavy, specially for a 13yo. It weighs 4Kg / about 9 pounds. But anything in that sort of look will be about the same or heavier.

If he's open to consider other looks (as I know how boys can be with that sort of thing...), then I would suggest something in the M700 / VSR style.
A JG BAR-10 is 2.7Kg / 6 pounds, and you can get a (sort of) pre-upgraded one with the scope for about $130, including the scope.

It makes for a much more effective gun on the field, so he'll enjoy it a lot. And it's the best platform for upgrades, if so desired in the future.

Doesn't the MB08 have a weight in the back of the stock that can be removed? Not sure you would want to .

I think if he sees the MB06 he'll like it. Get that and put a mag pull stock on it or something else cool, show him you can do that, and he will problably go for it.

There is also a guide for the Echo1 ASR here on the forum. http://www.airsoftsniperforum.com/44-others/3172-echo-1-asr-knowledge-compendium.html

The Echo1 does have a few things going for it. Comes with 2 magazines and includes a bipod. (Most of the time bipods just get in the way and add unnecessary weight.) The gun can be upgraded using APS2/Type96 parts, which can make a solid rifle.

Platform wise, as Dimitri said, the VSR platform (JG Bar10) is the best platform to build a great rifle out of. Parts a plenty for the VSR. APS2 parts are available, just have to dig a little harder.

Though being 13, looks will more then likely prevail on that.

The echo1 asr IS the WELL MB06. Echo1 cloned WELL. WELL on their part cloned maruzen's SR2. All the same gun really, the MB06 is just the cheapest of the bunch.

I personally would buy him a jg bar-10 as it is pretty decent out of the box, looks good, is light, and as he gets older and wants to use it in some real games, he can upgrade it to his liking. Many other guns are a pain to upgrade and are pretty heavy. It would be a shame if he wanted to upgrade or play some real games and couldn't because he had difficulty with his gun.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your suggestions and will dig further. I'm sure a lot of what he's going for is looks but I don't want him to be disappointed with performance, especially since he does shoot and hunt already. I'm all about the performance and not wanting a cheap feeling gun.

Well, how about that! You learn something new every day!! We don't have Well rifles in this part of the world (at least not branded Well) so this is all new...thanks for the eye opener!! I feel slightly more 'worldly' today...>:D

True, they are one in the same. They are not 1 for 1, or at least this is what I believe. This stems from when I compared my Echo1 SVD to the CYMA SVD. Which are the same gun, one is nicer then the other, in terms of fit & finish, and performance to an extent.

E1 SVD ~$252 ($270-18 for the extra mag it comes with.) VS Cyma SVD $190. A $62 dollar difference for what is the same gun. To make a long story short, the E1 is the nicer of the 2. (and I dont have the document i wrote here with me at work...)

End of the day, you are probably looking at the same gun predominantly regardless of the brand. In my experiences, I am fairly certain the E1 would be nicer of them.

Another example is the BRAVO m4 hop chamber, OEM is Lonex, ASG ULTIMATE upgrade line for gearboxes, Lonex again. There are only a handful of OEM manufacturers.
