I would personally go with the bottom one because even though you probably won't use the middle rails with a scope anyway, the cylinder might reflect the sun with the open one and give away your position. Either way to me the one with the notch on it just looks strange, although maybey I'm just not used to it.

I think when you put the scope on it, no one is going to notice the difference. It is like if you are making something out of wood and you accidentally scratch something ever so slightly, you will be the only one who will see it.

If you must have the top rail you can put a piece of tape or something over the opening to the cylinder during games.

About that tick problem, All you need to do is after a game check yourself for ticks. Chances are if a tick does get on you, it will take several hours for them to actually bite you. then it will take some time for limes, IF they have it, to infect you. I have gone on many camping and survival trips and have found at least 20 ticks walking across me at once. Just picked them off and I was fine.

I would only get a new cylinder if you somehow become rich, or like you said, win the lottery. If you are looking for the cheapest piston you can find, leave the cylinder alone.
