Brace yourself: noob question. I tried searching for this in the search options, but apparently "L96" is too common a word. Anyways: thoughts on this? If you are going to heavily upgrade both a Maruzen L96 and a TM VSR-10 to the same (high-performance) level, how would you choose? Is it mainly looks? Personal preference? Total cost? Ease of use?

Depends on personal choice I believe. I use a VSR as they are light and I prefer the frame of it over the heavier and bulkier Lapua. I believe that It will come down to personal preferance.

I got the bar 10 because there are much more aftermarket parts. Also, the size of it doesn't slow you down. But the rifle is not as appealing to most.

The l96 has bigger cylinder volume provided more air. The large bolt handle is much more easy to use than the bar-10/ vsr-10. Counter Strike fanatics out there.

You have your figures wrong. The L96 has a smaller volume in the cylinder and so the VSR can produce more energy to carry the heavier bb.
L96 volume = 31415 mm^3
VSR volume = 34624 mm ^3

I don't really get why so many people say this... there are plenty of parts for the type 96 rifles. Upgrade parts availability doesn't really matter there.

You can get an AA hopup chamber for both rifles. Inner barrels are the same, really. Then there's buckings.... some argue that VSR style buckings are better, but when you're R-hopping (which you are in a maximum upgrade) then it doesn't matter and AEG buckings have an edge anyway (in my opinion).

As for the entire cylinder assembly, doesn't matter too much. My type 96 STOCK cylinder with an upgraded piston has 100% airseal (WELL cylinder).

You could argue about the durability, but there's steel parts available, for the trigger as well.

It really comes down to aesthetics and personal preference. But I'll say this:

The VSR rifles are lighter. A type 96 is heavy. A VSR or BAR10 is fairly light. They have different exterior so that's really the big difference.

The other difference are the mags. I personally find type 96 mags inconvenient. VSR mags are smaller and can fit in a pistol pouch. Type 96 mags need an M4 style mag pouch, they're just bulkier.

That's the real difference. But the performance is the same. VSR rifles could push a heavier bb (more joule creep even) but I'd say that's marginal.

For a long time I ran a fully upgraded Well L96. It preformed very well, and I had no trouble finding upgrade parts, but but was pretty heavy and not as well balanced as the VSR that my buddy owned. It really wasn't that big of a deal for me since I'm in pretty good shape and hit the gym a lot, but if you're humping it around all day your back will definitely get sore. I eventually sold my rifle in favor of a DMR platform (it fits my play style better), but if I was going to get another sniper rifle, I would definitely go for a VSR.
