So have been searching about for an m40a5 front rail and none exist !

So my solution is to take a rail segment and a spare part of my laser set up and attach it like this.

The front scope was just for seeing if it was level with the rear scope

There's a link .
Be advised if you need to rise your cheek pad up it doesn't work as it did for mine

So unfortunately I had to drill holes in where the cheek pad prongs go through. For me it stores of a storage thing as it holds all the batteries for my laser and illuminating reticule , 3 of my important Allen keys and a spare mag, makes reloading so much easier !

Are you trying to attach the NV optic to the front portion you created, and trying to use NV and a separate scope?
If so, that particular setup will not work. This is because of the way the optics work. If you have the scope behind the NV, then the scope will be zooming in on a "digital" form of a picture, and if you have ever had a high digital zoom camera, you'll know the quality is terrible. Another thing is that the NV must be pretty far away from the objective lens, if you do not, it would be like trying to see your hand in front of the scope, its blurry.
To fix this, simply make the NV go behind the scope, that way the NV is intensifying the light gathered by the scope. This will allow for a clearer view. And also, make sure that the NV is the correct distance from the optical lens of your scope; the NV works as an eye, so the objective lens of the NV should be the same distance away from the scope as would your eye (a.k.a. eye relief.)
I have Gen. 3 night vision I used for nautical applications, although its an ugly yellow and lacks a rail mount, I found what I just explained by experimenting with this NV and the scope.

Correct in general, but they do make specific night visions that mount in front of the scope. I have seen them on varmint rifles on a ranch in Oregon. So it depends on whether he has a NV that is meant to be looked through with the naked eye or one specifically designed for use in front of a scope.

The NV behind the scope works but it's a much dimmer image than if the NV is by itself. I'm ordering a different scope to test a theory about it. I thinks it's because the biggest exit pupil I've found on a rifle scope is aroun 14-16mm and the objective on my NV and most any NV is 20mm or bigger. So you are not effectively using your full light gathering abilities. I've also heard that the NV behind a scope through you POA off aswell.

Bobcat: I'm not sure about the eye relief though because I've put my NV tight up against the back of my scope and got a full view through the NV. It may depend on the scope and NV combination. Not sure.

Looking for new or used? I bought a gen 1 monical for $40 and a gen2 monical for $60 both used from eBay. Not highly recommended to buy higher priced stuff on there unless you really know what you're looking at. I've seen people trying to sell used PVS-14s for $2000 on eBay when you can buy new from some retailers for less. Granted I don't remember if either one was legit PVS-14 or generic knock offs.

For $400 you were either looking at digital or gen1. Either one isn't bad but they're nothing to write home about. If you're going to be the only guy on the field using NV I would get an IR light to go with it. Adds some distance and brightness to what you can see but it's not visible to the naked eye. But if someone else is using NV it will lead them right to you.

that would be helpful... do they have front rails for L96's?
